Any thoughts on this? Picked it up at a yard sale for $2. I assume it's an uncirculated coin set. Just haven't seen one like this before. Thanks
It's a tourist souvenir set. For 2 dollars, you can't go wrong. Even the face value of the coins are close to a dollar. Can't quite remember how much one goes for in Korea - maybe around 10 - 20 dollars?
Yep. A tourist souvenir set. This is what I call a "Patent" set, for a lack of what the heck to call it(!) Sets like these have a Patent number prominently shown on the case, hence "patent set". These seem to date from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. Maybe later? I do not know what company or companies manufacture these. If this was an official Bank of Korea or Komsco (South Korean Mint) product, it would be evident on the holder. These patents sets are glass and metal encased coin sets and are sold at most tourist shops in Korea. They feature legit coins, but totally common pulled-from-rolls kind of coins. Here's some others:
