I've been offered this on Craigslist. Thoughts? I told the seller that it looks yellow, and the strange wear (N in United seems obliterated, but the rest of the details are fine) concerns me. Then again, I've never purchased circulated gold.

I would not buy raw gold on craigslist.

I'm not entirely sure why you would pass on it solely for it being CL. I would love to have a better reason than that. After all, I sell raw gold on CL. ;)

Heres your answer: Craiglist has a bad rep.

I wouldn't quantify the above as a better reason. If anything, it's rewording the original statements. The query isn't about the marketplace, it's about the product being sold.

The color issue is just bad lighting.... I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that tile in the background is light gray and the grout is white. The coin seems to have good honest wear, the strike is weak in spots, some nicks, so I don't see any red-flags as to it being a cast coin. I'd buy anything from CL with more caution than usual though.

The marketplace is notorious for fakes and scams etc... So if buying from a bad market place, how much can you trust the product you want to buy to be what it is advertised as?

My suggestion if you want it that bad, is have him meet you at a local coin store that you know and trust and let the dealer authenticate it.
