Do you have the coin in hand? What is that on the obverse? It looks pitted. Is the coin in any type of holder?
I would ask the dealer about the obverse. If it is pitting which it appears to me I would be worried about polishing or smoothing. If not I would say 65 at best. What is the asking price?
That's a VERY pretty Buff. You need to be careful with this series. I always look at the hip bone and flank with these as this will be the first place you'll see rub. But as we all know, or should know is that the the high points on any coin is always the last spot to fill out when struck. That's why it's so important to hold the coin and tilt it to & fro and look for a break in the luster. With the coin your showing here I can see some flatness on the hip bone and the flank. All I can say is look the coin over very carefully when you receive it. I have the same year 1927 with this same flatness. Nice Buff!!!!!
Dex I'm not up on the varietys of the Buffs is there any with doubling on the ert as it looks like above. I can't see real well off my phone.
Hey now....I have the "Cherrypicker" guide book and it does not show anything with the 27-P....I think what you and I are seeing there is "strike doubling" this accures very offten with this series and adds nothing to the value. I love the luster on this Buff your showing but Like I said before BE CAREFUL!! . If there is any sign of rub it will not grade MS. But it could also be just a tad weak in the hip bone and flank area. VERY nice looking piece bud.....DEX
Here's a 27 Buff that's AU...As you can see there's a tad bit of rub on the hip bone and flank. It's very clear there is rub. Ya know I find it funny that most sellers list Buffs like this as MS and it makes me sick as I see many folks buying these coins thinking their MS. Not always is this the case because many buffs just do not fill out in the area so you must be very careful when purchasing raw Buffs. I thin k your has a very good chance grading MS but ya need to look for a break in the luster . Best of luck....DEX
Thanks for sharing a photo of an AU 27. I see what you are talking about and from the photos I loaded above it is tough to tell. It does have really nice color and looks like good luster.
This also concerns me coppertoning. I do not know the series at all and I am having a hard time assessing the surfaces. I also have this concern on another buffalo I have for sale. I think I am going to pull the listing and have someone who knows better take a look. The last thing I want to do is sell them and they turn out to be problem coins. edit: I pulled the listings. I'll see what the local coin shop has to say about them and go from there. Here is the other one, in case anyone cares. I really do feel this has been cleaned. I did mention it in my listing. If I am correct, being a good date/mm, I hope it's still worth something.
The 28 does kind of look cleaned. The original coin I see on the obverse, but almost looks like carbon spots on it. The original coin looks very nice in my opinion and I don't think that rim nick on the reverse would cause it to be bagged. To me the 27 looks very nice in the original picture. Will be interested to see what the local shop says.
The reason I brought this up is because I once bought a 16-S with similar surfaces. Although mine was obvious AU. As for your coin it could just be the pics. It is so hard to judge from even the best pics. I will search for the pic of my coin and see if I can find it.
I'm glad you brought it up. I needed to hear it and therefore push me to make the decision to pull it. I am always an advocate of raw coins, so the last thing I want to do is push out problem raw coins.
