Got a smokin' deal on some Morgans last night and this one was one of two CC's I bought. I am sending it in to NGC just because I got it for such a good price and I needed one more coin to send in anyways. Just wondering about opinions on grade so I know what to expect when I get it back. Thanks!

I'd say MS64. Maybe a 64+ due to the clean fields. That's a beautiful coin you have there :)

I'm thinking it will grade MS64. The bag marks on her face are pretty common for most GSA 64's.

By the way, did you know that NGC now provides the grade guarantee for the GSA's.

I'm going to say MS63. There are a few marks on the cheek but it's hard to see exactly how bad they are in the image. MS63 might be conservative though...it could go 64.

Thanks all. I am hoping for MS64 and personally think it will grade at that. The bag marks on the cheek are not very pronounced at all, in fact I have an 81cc MS64 and I'll say that the marks on the 81 are probably 2 or 3 x's worse.

It's amazing to me how a coin that is 130 years old, look this clean, without plastics to protect it back in the day. How did they protect coins back then?

Well you have to remember that with these GSA coins, they never really saw the light of day until the 1970's when they were sold by the GSA to collectors. The reason this particular coin looks so nice is because it sat in a vault for all those years.

The GSA coins sat inside large bags in a vault undisturbed for many decades.

IMO, it is significantly better than my MS 63. I also guess 64.

I don't see any wear...but if it has wear on the breast, how can it be MS?

Is that what you would grade it, or what you think a TPG is going to grade it? Just wondering....

just my opinion. PCGS or NGC might grade it MS63-64.

i was being nice with the MS grade. i wanted to say AU, but i figured everybody would flip out if i said that. i have seen plenty of morgans with breast wear and other problems graded MS grades by the third party grading services.

If the coin has wear...it has wear and can't be MS. However, you have to be sure that it's not a weak strike.

my point was that the grading services still give AU coins MS grades. it does not make the coins MS, it just might make some people (think) that those coins are MS. my eyes are seeing breast wear on the coin, it is probably not from a weak strike.

I think this coin has a good strike...but I disagree with you that the TPGs give AU coins MS grades...at least not the top tier TPGs. Maybe one falls through the cracks every once in a while...but it's the exception, not the rule.

MS-63, although NGC might go 64, as I have found them mostly more lenient than PCGS ( not starting a war, just my experience).

I think it depends on the series.
