I recently submitted 5 coins to ANACS and they are on their way back to me. How do you think they are with their grading compared to NGC and PCGS? It would also be interesting if you could share some of your experiences with using ANACS or buy/selling ANACS coins that you have personally owned (I have never owned an ANACS graded coin before, only NGC and PCGS).
PCGS>NGC>ANACS>IGC ANACS used to be much better, but now they are not held in as high regard. They are really good for slabbing varieties listed in places other than the Cherrypicker's Guide, though, since PCGS and NGC would not bother with those.
Personally, I find no problem with ANACS grading. I use all three companies and I use them each for different coins and for different reasons. I think their grading is as good as the others but I don't deal with early type coins so someone with experience in that category may be of further help. I will definitely say that their coins don't bring nearly as much as a NGC or PCGS graded coin which is a shame. Some of my best cherrypicks were coins found in a ANACS holder then crossed over to PCGS or NGC. Grades were the same, but holders different.
I like ANACs and would use them for some coins. Usually I like the older holders - you can usually, not always, get them cheaper than the other two grading companies - and have an accurate grade in my opinion.
I sent coins in that people had mixed feelings about when i showed them and thought that I might receive a details grade with NGC or PCGS, but personally, I thought that they didnt look cleaned. I sent a capped bust half, a two cent, two morgans, and a peace dollar
I can only speak to errors, but I think they tend to undergrade more often than the other two. They are no more or less likely to certify a fake than anyone else.
Just got the results, im happy, considering they were thought the be cleaned by some people: 1832 50c EF40 1866 2c MS62 (I think its under undergraded) 1888-O $1 VG8 Hot Lips 1904-S $1 EF40 DETAILS 1921 $1 PEACE VF35 DETAILS
I finally have all three types of their slabs and I'm happy with all the coins in these slabs. I'm not that picky on the subjective grading opinions of others. As far as the big guys are concerned, I've seen them all grade coins that made me scratch my head. http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/index.aspx?CertNumber=3825121-008
Yea, I still can't figure out why they use the word details, which is so generic. If it has been cleaned, just say 'cleaned'
What about ICG, I notice eBay still allows them to be considered graded coins, what are people's feelings on them, I'm just curious?
Anacs is ok for varieties. Can't comment on ICG never dealt with them. As a collector I will buy PCGS coins for larger coins such as Morgan Dollars and NGC for smaller ones like Buffalo Nickels Why? because I like the way they are presented in their holders. Yet I always remember to buy the coin and not the slab. As a dealer I'm mostly likely going to offer a bit less for an ANACS Graded coins as opposed to a PCGS or NGC unless of course it is an important variety that the big 2 don't attribute. That's where ANACS has it edge.
I don't submit coins but tending on what the boys before me have said........ya can't go wrong.......
@josh's coins how much less would you pay for an ANACS graded coin with the same grade as a PCGS graded coin? Say you would pay $250 for the PCGS coin. What would you pay for the ANACS one? $225? More? Less?
Also, someone mentioned earlier that ANACS tends to under-grade their coins,... With that said, wouldnt people want to buy ANACS coins in hopes of upgrading???
I recently submitted a batch of woodies to ANACS - mostly just to get them slabbed for protection. Every single one of them was graded below what I figured they were and some substantially so, but I don't deduct for being a woody. I am not sure what to read from that, but I doubt they are overgrading like many seem to believe.
