I took the bait and got hooked too. I wonder to myself, and now in writing, how can a 4AD coin go for this cheap? Is it the condition? The non-rarity? My first time ordering these coins was a eBay auction, 4 of them for $25. (or something similar) Of course the fun is as mentioned in previous forum rantings that trying to Identify the coin is a joy unto itself. Having just purchased the Krause set of 3 (17-1800, 18-1900, 19-2000) I am certainly not going to find any info on 4AD there! Which, is how I got into the 2 or 3 forums I most recently joined. One coin in particular I am able to (sort-of) ID is supposedly worth $125. Aurelian Ae antoninian. INVICTUS titulaire Granted this coin was cleaned better, but what gives? Is it the cleaning which determines price over rarity? Very confusing. Any help and/or opinions would be great. rad1964
I'm going to teach you to fish. You have all the important info on the coin, particularly the mintmark on the reverse. Now use this site to narrow it down to RIC #. Try under Probus.
ok this is what I could dig up... 280 AD Antoniniani of Probus Serdica Mint - RIC 858 Type C Bust, Radiate, cuirassed, draped bust right seen from behind Emperor standing right, scepter in left hand, receiving globe from Jupiter standing left, scepter in left hand KAA RIC V, Part II, 855 Correct? http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=241039&AucID=349&Lot=658 That one was estimated at $267.. http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=235783&AucID=337&Lot=2811 $217 there...
The ones you posted are legend variants. Yours reads IMP CM AVR PROBVS PF INVICTO AVG, the ones you posted read IMP CM AVR PROBVS PF INVICTVS AVG. RIC Vb 840, mintmark KA dot A dot. Rated as R, still probably not worth more than $10 or $15.
ahh.. my eyes are not what they used to be I guess my nickname eagle eyes need to go Well this is good to know.. I forsee many posts on this subject in the near future as I purchased a mystery bag with lots of goodies So just as GLORIA EXERCITVS (Glory of the Army) what does IMP CM AVR PROBVS PF INVICTO AVG translate to?
IMPERATOR CAESAR MARCVS AVRELIVS PROBVS PIVS FELIX INVICTVS AVGVSTVS ------- Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus [the] Dutiful, Fortunate [and] Invincible Augustus or something like that.
