I believe this to be a die clash. It's the first one I've found. I wish the coin was in better shape,But I'll take it. I'd appreciate your thoughts!
I thought the clashes showed up in the fields and not on the devices? Jefferson's eyes would be in part of the recess on the hammer die, how does the reverse image of Liberty transfer to that area?
Clashes tend to show up on the high points of the die, which are the low points in the coin. On the TJ dollar, notice that the eyes are recessed into the design which makes it a higher point in the die. IMO, I think the mint technician may not have polished this area as much when he/she was touching up the die after the clash. Since the rest of the area around It would be recessed in the die, It appears to be an easy place to overlook if you're in a hurry
Not sure how I can help out - Oldhoopster posted about die clashes. They can be in the fields, and in the design elements. Some are strong and vivid, some are minor from common die repair.
