May 26th, 17 A.D.: Germanicus celebrates a triumph in Rome. His triumph was celebrated after recovering two of the three legionary standards lost in the Battle of the Teutoburg forest, fought in 9 A. D., and after defeating Germans in the Battle of the Weser River. When he was recalled to Rome by Tiberius, he was reassigned to a different command, and the next year he became a consul for the second time. May 27th, 1703: Tsar Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg. The city was named after Saint Peter the Apostle, Peter’s patron saint. It was founded after conquering the land from Sweden in the Great Northern War. His idea was that this city became the “window to Europe”, and nine years after its foundation, Peter the Great named it as capital city of Russia. June 1st, 193: Didius Julianus beheaded on the Palatine. After the death of Pertinax, the Praetorian guards announced that the throne was to be sold to the man who would pay the highest price. Didius Julianus was proclaimed emperor by the Senate when he gained the throne. Sixty-six days after his ascension, he was killed in the palace by a soldier, after the Senate revoked his power and proclaimed Severus emperor.
