April 21st, 1509 Henry VIII ascends to the throne of England He was the last king to be part of the War of Roses. Henry VIII is mainly remembered for two things: his six marriages; and his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, and his own establishment as the Supreme Head of the Church of England. He ascended to the throne upon his father’s death, and ruled for 37 years, until his death on January 28th, 1547. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 22nd, 1864 The U.S. Congress authorized the two-cent piece. Two-cent pieces were minted from 1864 to 1873 at the Philadelphia Mint. After two unsuccessful attempts to strike the coin, the Congress finally authorized its minting on April 22nd, 1864. This means the decision was made in the middle of the Civil War. The two-cent coin was minted due to the scarcity of one cent coins, gold coins and silver coins, which were hoarded by the people during the war. The lack of use of coins from 1867 on shows that when one cent coins reappeared, two cents were less demanded. As time went by, fewer of them were struck, until in 1873 only proof coins were produced
