Because they can and there is a sucker born every minute. Obviously, he didn't get just serious bidders or the price wouldn't be so out of line. I like to consider it "Ghost In A Jar Syndrome". Ebay likes these kinds of auctions because they get publicity. Fortunately, this seller will probably never get serious bids and will just have to throw his grilled-cheese sandwich away when it gets too ripe. Personally, I'm waiting for him to sell the potato that looks like Elvis
I'm kind of thinking, that if the person does not pay, there could be a court battle soon? Just a thought.
I don't think it will get that far. He already said that he has run this auction once before. I'm sure that one was NPB also. Did you see the auction a while back with the man that was selling the wedding dress? The seller ran that one three times and could not get anyone to pay a reasonable price - all because he started off modeling it himself, which I thought was a cute idea. That guy really was just trying to sell the wedding dress from his ex-fiance. He never expected to get the kind of publicity that he did. He was actually a funny, smart guy who thought up a selling technique that was too good. There is never any way of telling which auctions are going to pull that kind of publicity and bids. The grilled-cheese guy has now tried having a pre-approved bidders list and still the price has reached a point that no one (even if they weren't in their right mind) would pay. I'm sure this one will go the way of all the others and fade away.
I saw this story on the news, supposively the first time it went for 23,000.00 but, ebay suspended the seller or something.
So maybe he'll get suspended again. I still want to know where that potato shaped like Elvis is! Maybe I should contact the seller and see if he has one
I saw a cheesesandwich elvis thing on there, goin for 20 somethin bucks, go to ebay, and in the search engine type " virgin mary cheese"
If you type in grilled cheese, there are 310 items listed !!! Somebody is bidding over $14,000 for a Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich replica, he has a feedback rating of -1. I bet the auction gets pulled
You know, I have seen many things in my life. This too me is just sad. I took a long look at the withdrawn and retracted bids. It is also a bit funny to see that the 4 current bids all happened near the same time. With the bidder hidden, could this be friend helping out to make more news? This is just one more example of why people should worry about Ebay.
Just one more thought: Here is a quote from the auction page: "All bidders must be on a pre approved bidder list, to get on that list you must email me prior to bidding, eBay is not allowing you to bid unless you do so, eBay is watching this auction very closely and veryifying all bids, An eBay official will be calling you, if you are bidding! if you bid and you retract the bid, you may be subject to concequences at eBay's discretion!" Now that inspires confidence in a system that is stating that they are working hard to weed out fakes and scams and other bad auctions.
Haha I love the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese trading card, and the "I ate the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese" bumper sticker!
