I came across a flying eagle cent and this looks too good to be true. I wonder what you guys think of it.

The lighting for a determining photo should have some direct light across the coin at an angle to approximate any lines or scratches. This is what you would do if it was in hand, tilting it and observing. With these photos it appears any cleaning done was not recent or abusive, if at all. Nice looking coin even with the color under the beak.

I think it is an excellent coin and year I think is was cleaned. Weather it was harshly cleaned I can't answer you.

From your images, I'd say "not cleaned".

I don't see anything that would make me think cleaned.
At the same time the white balance is a bit off in the image.
Something could be hiding but I don't think so.

It doesn't look too bad to me. If anything, perhaps it was "dark" at one time, and someone used a mild abrasive to remove some of the darkness. The only reason I say this is that the coin is still dark around the rim on the obverse, which is one of the most difficult places to remove stuff from on these cents.

Even so, it looks like a solid piece.

Not that you asked, but this coin has an extremely good strike for a Flying Eagle cent. Most coins show quite a bit of weakness on the reverse, especially over "ONE CENT", but your example appears fully struck.

I agree with it might have been cleaned but from the pictures it looks pretty nice.

When I see the dark spots clinging to the lettering I think "cleaned"

    Ruben,

I would agree with you on a coin claiming to be uncirculated, but it makes more sense opposite for a circulated coin, where crud from circulation would tend to accumulate in the crevices. On an EF coin, NOT finding dark stuff inside the lettering and date would be more suspicious to me.

I dont believe that it's been cleaned, but sometimes you can't really tell by pics., only by examining it yourself, (in hand), anyway, it's a beautiful coin.:)

On an FE in this condition I actually worry if it's not dark around the lettering. It should be. It's a VF something and looks just right for the grade.

I will have to agree with the not cleaned folks. From the photos i don't think it has been cleaned. If it has it was a long time ago. JMO

It looks original to me , nice color , if it was cleaned it was done a long time ago and not harshly .

I like the term you used borgovan of "mild abrasive". :thumb: I think I may start using that when I describe cleaned coins.:D It sounds both terrible and innocent at the same time!

Anyways, nice coin! I don't see any cleaning from the photos, yet it's possible to hide it when taking pictures.

If it was cleaned it was a minor cleaning, and done long ago. If you can pick this up for a price you would be happy with then I would go for it :)
