I know, terrible image. The coin itself is pretty stinky, but the image is a little worse. Any thoughts?
I don't think so - the proportions and rims resemble issues of the time of the Han dynasty. Perhaps a wu zhu or a huo quan of Wang Mang. Unfortunately, I can't make out the characters on the obverse.
Agreed, it has to be Han, with a slight possibility it could be earlier. I know to most western collectors cash coin looks alike, but if you are around them enough you start seeing large differences in fabric. Btw, Thais and Malays never cast cash coins. Chinese cash circulated there due to Chinese population. Thailand's first coinage was bullet and canoe money in the 18th century, then proceeded to western style coinage. Its actually very scarce to even find CHinese cash in Thailand.
Actually, the Islamic dynasties in the area issued cash-like coins. http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=104485
Yeah, those were in southern Thailand. I think I forgot about them since they weren't the traditional square hole prototypes of the Chinese. They remind me more of the Thai coins later with holes in the center, but round holes. There were many SE Asian coins issued with round holes, even up until very modern times. I think they Thai's stopped in the 40's. Very good point, I was just explaining why I was not considering them cash. Chris
There's no way to tell. Image is blurry in some areas. Try scanning the image at 600 or above and increase the brightness. I agree with Ardatirion and Medoraman. Probably Han dynasty.
