on the reverse. I'm looking at buying a decent 78cc and like criculated coins. The reverse looks odd, anbody have insight? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200373032200&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Thanks for the input and I am staying off of this one. I have 2 others that I am on and will not post for obvious reasons. Just wanted to see if my ideas matched what others on here thought. What causes that appearance on the reverse? Dipping? Overdipping?
I can't be 100% sure but I would guess harsh cleaning coupled with bad pics, that IMO are an attempt to hide the harsh cleaning.
Has anybody ever purchased a fake on ebay or elsewhere? I have purchased about 100 morgans and peace dollars plus numerous halves, quarters and dimes and have not got dinged yet. Thank goodness, but the first thing I do when I get them is inspect thoroughly and test with a magnet. So far so good, and only got 1 cleaned coin, too bad I missed the disclosure in the listing, so it was my fault. I can't complain so far.
Somebody paid $81 for it. Ebay is a dangerous place if you are not informed, and even the informed can get toasted if not careful.
What do you think of this one? http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=3&campid=5335874456&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D150364746633%26ssPageName%3DSTRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT
I think it's probably genuine, with a rim ding on rev at 12, and a scratch across the eagle's breast. Might have been cleaned, note the somewhat geometric shaped lighter area on the left obv field. If I were bidding on it, I would bid as if it had all of the above issues. I also have no idea about its color, it could be toned or a glaring headlight.
The following paragraph is in regards to the 2nd coin I listed in post 15. The other I ran across while looking and hoped others would take note and give input. Thanks for the input and I want you to know that I was the buyer. I bought it on behalf of somebody that had theirs stolen. I saved about 80 of them in my watch list and then went through them with the buyer. This is the one they wanted so I bought it for them. As an interesting note, I happened to go to the local pawn shop and the 2 other stores that are here that sell coins and found their stolen coin, at least based on their description and bought that also. I will give them the option of buying theirs back for what I paid for it. The story of who stole their coin and why is sad and I will not get into it. I am guessing that I will own this coin and I will not feel bad about it at all. Can you help me out, why the "pinkish" hue? I can't tell if it is the photo or dipped and dried by an amatuer or whatever. All said and done, I will not fret over this purchase unless it is a total fake, which I highly doubt.
Both coins, IMO, are over cleaned, harshly cleaned junkers to steer well away from or unload as soon as possible if you did own them.
What about this one, again the reverse. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320411598817&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
