Thinking about submitting this 1904-O Morgan for grading. What do you think it will grade?

I have a couple of Morgan's that I have picked up and have been thinking about submitting them for grading. What are your thoughts? Worthwhile or not?

Here is the second, it's a 1900 New Orleans. It has an almost proof like strike. She has a few marks across her face, but looks stunning in hand. I feel that it is a very nice strike for a New Orleans Morgan. Again your opinions would be appreciated. I have some high resolution photos and videos to show the luster and the incredible fields on the obverse and reverse.

    Crazy talk. That's a 63+ or a 64 imo.

Definitely MS....weak strike typical for the New Orleans mint.
With a generous portion of luck MS 64.

The weak strike is common for the 04-O. However, this coin wouldn't grade better than MS63, so it's not worth submitting.

Newbe here, you guys are harsh and all over the board with the grade of the Morgan. I thought, because of the look and shine of the coin the grade would be high but then the grade would drop dramatically because of wear above the ear. So what constitutes an MS64 down to an AU? I then submit... DSC08087 (2).JPG

There is no wear on that coin. The hair above the ear, along with the chest feathers on the reverse, are symptoms of weaker strike. Very common coming out of New Orleans. New Orleans did not have the impressive strikes that San Francisco did at the time. I think that's a beauty. The bag marks (scuffs really) on her jaw will stop it from going 65 in my opinion. Nice O mint dollar!

    63. Great luster, face has marks on it, but the obverse fields are too clean and attractive for 61-62.

Thank you Argenteus Fossil for that. So in looking at jtlee321 and the 1904 O, any slight ding along the rim of even light blemish down the cheek or face of the coin takes away from the MS grade, correct ?

Any blemish will of course detract from eye appeal. Because any coins MS-60 and higher are uncirculated, eye appeal is what differs a 61 from a 63 and so on. Many factors play into eye appeal such as strike quality, bag marks or scuffs, etc. Now, location of said marks also factors in A LOT into grading. There are what's called focal points on coins. On the obverse of the Morgan Dollar, this happens to be her face as well as the fields directly in front of her face. What this means is that a small bag mark right across her nose or cheek will detract more from eye appeal than say the same mark behind her head.

    I hope this helps you!

I agree with most. 63 + nice lustre but the obverse with the hit on the face can be a 63 but you can get lucky to get a 64.

I think the coin in the OP is a 63 at best. Unless you just wanted to get it graded, I'd keep it in an airtite.

The PCGS MS64 posted later in the thread is a much nicer coin than the OP's.

We are NOT harsh with the coin. There is a lot of chatter on the cheek, and lots of bag marks. Typical Morgan--I would go with MS 63, due to the bag marks in a very prominent place (cheek). I would not submit, as it is very common date, and NOT proof like.
