There are several differences in the hair curls between the two types. The most noticeable is the addition of an extra above the lowest wave/curl in the hair. The red arrow in the second image is pointing to it. It is clearly not present on the coin in your second post. The next most noticeable difference is in the curl below the hair ribbons. On the style 1 it sticks out to the left while on the style 2 it droops down. The third difference is the curl at the back of the neck. On style 1 it curls down in a clockwise fashion, on the style 2 it curls up and is open at the top. The third curl is only useful on better grade coins as it disappear early as the coin wears. The first curl mentioned tends to remain visible down to coins grading G-VG. For even lower grade coins the second curl mentioned become important as it's outline tends to remain visible down to coins grading fair or worse.

I got a pretty nice problem free F12 1799 DBD at a reasonable price from my local coin shop. I was planning on buying a St. Gaudens Double Eagle at the time but it called out to me xD.

Definitely go with the 1799s since they are the most common and thus the cheapest but they're still rare enough to be really cool :p

I don't see anything wrong with it, S-161 Die stage XI And it is the type 1 hair used from 1796 to mid 1798 (S-164) and on the first obv of 1800 (S-190, 191 NC-5 and NC-6) Not sure why you would think it's the type 2 hair.

ok, in at 200.00 with a day to go...let's see where this one goes...had about 40 lots at heritage, all went way way past my budget, that damn 25% or 29.00 minimum really kicks ya in the butt..., at great collections i have about 194 lots pending, i will be lucky to get 10..the last batch did better than expected on some kennedy's and benjamins.. 17 won out of 86..better odds i usually pay 1/3 to 1/2 numismedia price, hoping to make a little...

    Nice coin.
I'm concentrating on Early Copper so THAT'S the sort of coin I'm after.
    BUT
Because of prices I'm currently limiting myself to 1800 or later.
I'm getting mostly VF's, will go for less expensive XF's, but will accept Fine for the pricey date/varieties.
(1802 half cents are definitely NOT on my shopping list.)

Right now I get most of my coins from GC auctions.

I agree with others, no reason to think the OP coin is a counterfeit.

I just got out of low grade early copper; sent my 35 piece date/ variety set in for the May 2022 EAC sale.

Concentrating on a countermarked large cent type set and of course counterfeits:D...

Yeah. I generally stick to fake error coins - this is completely out of my realm of expertise. Based on the other comments here, I did not ask to have it removed. But hey, it was a good test to see if I am watching the tagged posts! ;)
