Think I am gonna go and collect NGC * coins now.

Long time PCGS preference, but have seen some incredible NGC * coins now. I think my collection focus will change a bit--always have liked NGC, but in the past, tended towards PCGS. The latest lust fantasy acquisition:

I know exactly what you mean. For some reason, at least to me, NGC just seemed a distant second. However, I do not feel that way anymore. Also, NGC produce better storage boxes.

PS Very nice Morgan . . . dude!

I too like NGC coins. They were my choice for sending my coins in for slabbing and I just prefer their holders to PCGS'. I know they usually come in a close second to PCGS, but i find myself caring more for the coin and overall appearance than I do the grade so much. I really just like the grading because it preserves the coins and verifies (and guarantees) their authenticity.

Too many people get hung up on the slabs, or perhaps I should say which TPG slab it is. Forget the dang slab ! It doesn't matter which TPG slabbed the coin, nor does the grade on the slab. The only thing that matters is the coin itself, and how much it cost you.

For example, if you buy a coin in an ICG slab and the grade says 64, but you can get the coin for what a 63 cost and you believe it is a very solid 63, and you like the coin, then why not buy it ?

Are you buying plastic ? Or are you buying coins ?

You can get some very, very nice coins in almost anybody's slab. To ignore them, not even look at them just because of the slab - only hurts you.

Doug, you are correct in the general sense. If you can see the coin in hand, then the kind of slab or attributed grade for that matter do not matter. However, if you are purchasing online, you just may need to put some credence in the TPG.

Heck, ya can put credence in either one. I'm with Doug on this one, though a lot of my recent pickups have been from PCGS.

It has been my experience to put any credence in the TPG beyond authentication, any TPG, is a mistake.

And as long as you buy from a seller you know and trust, and only those you know and trust (which is all you should ever do to begin with), and the price is right, it doesn't matter if it's on line or in person.

I have never bought a single coin, any coin, because of the TPG who slabbed it, or because of the grade on the slab. Everyone, should always, stress always, completely ignore the name the of the TPG and the grade they assign. You should only buy coins based on the coin itself, and the price.

    Something to think about.

Doug, we know you don't have that much credibility for TPGs, and while I respect your opinion, I believe it to be false logic.

The only thing in my mind that makes his logic "false logic" is the greater fool theory. If you are betting you can get a bigger sucker to pay for a potentially cleaned, overgraded, coin, then ignore the coin altogether and just buy plastic.

Sadly, I cannot say this is not the state of the hobby in many areas nowadays. Its sad to think preying on the inconsistencies of human graders and authenticators is the basis for a collection, but in fact the very fact a coin is in a slab at X grade nowadays seems to many the only thing that matters. If you dispute the plastic in any way you are just "old fashioned, ignorant, and not with the times".

I wear my old fashionedness in coin collecting as a badge of honor, but I know I am not in the majority any longer.

I like collecting both kinds of coins. It is my modern 20th century coins in MS condition that I have in slabs. The slabbed stuff is the cheap and pretty stuff. The serious coins are not slabbed. I think slabs have a place.

Same here. To me, PCGS holder look and feel cheap. I think NGC holders have a much cleaner/professional look and a more solid feel to them.

Most of my Ikes are PCGS only because i believe they have a stronger emphasis on the strike of the coin and often times are more eye appealing but this does not influence which coins i buy, as a matter of fact the best looking Ike i have ever seen was in a NGC slab. It doesn't matter what grade the slab says, who graded it or if it is graded at all, none of that should influence what coins you buy. I think doug gives the best advice followed by the worst advice.

I agree with you that you should always take the grade on the slab with a grain of salt and only buy coins that you feel meet your requirements for the given grade, every serious collector should have there own requirements for there collection no doubt about it. I disagree with ignoring an obvious market trend though, i mean lets face it PCGS coins bring more money. You dont have to agree with it or like it but to ignore it all together is in the words of Morgandude11 "false logic."

Dont take this the wrong way either Doug, I respect you and your opinion, you have probably forgot more than i know about coins.

By the way , did I ever say that I don't buy IGC or SEGS coins that I like, and crack them out? Of course I have over the years. To say I mainly buy " plastic" is being incredibly simplistic. However, I have found that most of the nicest coins reside in PCGS or NGC slabs. Lately, I've been liking more and more NGC Morgans that I happen to see. Does that make me a foolish collector for choosing the nicest looking coins, residing in the top two TPG holders? Hardly!!!

When I'm buying online, I can't always buy what I want from a dealer I trust. The TPG slabs give me peace of mind.

That is a valid point John. You can't put total piece of mind in it, but you place a good amount in a credible TPG coin.

So you admit you DO look at "lesser" TPG and buy them then? That was Doug's point. The slab shouldn't make you buy or sell, the coin should be looked at by itself. Having a 64 in a PCGS slab already may be convenient, but a 64 is a 64, whatever the slab, and whatever the slab's grade reads.

To me that is what Doug was saying. What is on the slab may affect the price you are willing to pay for convenience, but shouldn't make your decision for you. But, to many, it is the only consideration.

Btw Morgandude, I am willing to bet you know EXACTLY the collectors we are talking about. You probably see them at every show. :)

Many times when I buy a slab online it is to purchase another lower to mid grade MS coin of the same type I already own so I can compare them against each other. This way I can see what the "professionals" are up to and try and discern what they think a MS63 is and a MS64 and so on. I think it is great reference for learning.
