HA! I actually love that, because it's my wife or kids (etc.) showing that they actually think about my interests enough to take note of things of that nature.

what I like the least about coin collecting... I don't make enough money to buy all the coins I want (then again, Bill Gates probably doesn't make enough money to buy all the coins I want), so sometimes I have to make very difficult choices. Out of those times, I sometimes look back and wonder if I would have been happier going the other way.

I hate having to defend the hobby. I recently revealed to a fellow minister that I was a coin collector. He told me that he used to collect coins too ... in his bank account. ARGH!

I hate when dealers at shows immediately dismiss me or even ignore me alltogether simply because I'm a woman  ...however, on the flip side, I LOVE making it clear to them that I actually DO know what I'm talking about then walking away to spend my money with a dealer that treats me with respect :p .

Hmmmm - how about that you can't find 800 yr old gold coins in MS condition for under a buck :D

Ya wanna know what I really hate about the hobby - the fact that so many try to take advantage of others. Of course - I hate that about life in general. Just ****** me off

You beat me to it. I don't like dealers who try to take advantage of me, or try to sell me what they have instead of what I want. This is why I now do most of my buying on the internet. This has a whole different set of problems, but is worth it.

GDJMSP nailed it. Coin collertors do need to beware. Not to be overly negative but I have been ripped off several times. What I hate most are those "lightly cleaned" coins the ones that even a sharp coin collector would have trouble spotting. Worse still are the lightly cleaned and natural retoned. Those coins that were cleaned in the 1920's and retoned in an album. If you have not been around coins for a while you may want to stick to cert. coins for the older coins.

    What i hate most.

    1) Slabbing
    2) Holed coins
    3) Commemoratives
    4) Bullion being called 'coins'.
    5) Verdigris
    6) Bright colourfully toned coins

And i'm not keen on cleaned coins but when you collect coins a 1000 years old you've simply got to live with it. But i don't like modern coins cleaned.

1.) Sellers that state a coin is in "excellent condition" when it would barely meet a VG grade on a good day.
    2.) Unsearched lots that state, "1909s-VDB, 1914-D, 1922 Plain, 1931-S all found!"
3.) Getting charged $5 for S&H when the coin arrives in a #10 envelope with a 37 cent stamp.
4.) Newbies that ask "How much is this worth?" without making an effort to "search" here at CT or elsewhere.
5.) Star Grading Service (SGS) and powersellers like Aboncom that own them.
6.) People that think you are a "nerd" because you collect coins (I lettered in many sports and come football season, it is me and the NFL ticket on Direct TV.)
7.) Dealers that get upset if you refer to the Red Book or Coin Values when discussing a paticular coin.
8.) The Chinese sellers that sell fake "Trade Dollars" and fake slabs
9.) Getting charged sales tax on coins (especially US coins)
10.) People that get great advice here, but simply ignore it and post again mindless dribble and stupid questions.

Dont tell me Im talking with the little guys of your generation. The only time I get made fun of for collecting is by family or by friends kidding around. No kid will make fun of the hobby in front of me.

Collectors that try and make errors out of everything, even a slight die flaw that can't be seen without a microscope.

Major errors i can accept but there has to be a limit somewhere... otherwise even normal die wear will produced a few million error coins. I think that terminology needs to be greatly tightened up.

    And are a minister
Preach on, brother! I've been known to preach long, but not during football season. 15, 20 minutes, tops, so I can shake hands and get home by kickoff. Heck, there are people in my congregation who would be greatly displeased with me if I didn't.

I hate it when people find cool stuff in rolls. I get so jealous when people are finding silver hoards in boxes of halves, or when they get silver in change, because I hardly ever encounter those things. It's very frustrating.

I'm with you sylvester, on this one. I't's got to be the no. 1 thing I dislike most about coin collecting. So don't get me started on this one, or there may be no end to my ranting and raving on the subject.

The most hated thing in collecting is when someone tries to sell me a forgery, presented as a real coin.

Wow, didn't expect quite so many responses to this! Heres another:

Having to pay for everything with rolled pennies because you bought a box of them and have to get rid of the rejects some how.
