I just wanted to relate this to all you roll hunters out there, especially the beginners. While doing a little roll hunting of my own this morning, I found what looked, and I mean REALLY looked, like a 1996 WAM. However, it was really dirty, so I slipped it into a bowl of sudsy water while I peeled the rest of the roll. After that, I swished the coin a couple of times, then pat-dried it on a towel. Took it over to the magnifier and guess what? It WASN'T a WAM. That should have been the end of the story, as it is so many thousands of times. However this one continues. I opened the next roll and spilled out about a third of it on my mat. The very next coin I grabbed was a 1998 WAM in very high AU or maybe even MS condition! Moral of the story: keep on truckin'. The coolest stuff happens at the most unexpected times.
Far as I know, the '96 WAM doesn't exist. I've never known anybody that's seen a picture of it. I think it was a hoax.
No Kidding! I have found some incredibly valuable coins at the most unlikeliest of times! The heart races. The breathing gets shallow and quick. The brain bathes itself in endorphines as it files the experience away for future use and then the mind begins to ponder the possibilities!
Lon - That's really interesting. I looked around on the web, and it looks like you're right. Only one coin was discovered and then apparently stolenm and that coin had a litany of errors. Interestingly, the 2012 Red Book actually lists the 1996P WAM as a variety! I have no idea what the truth of the story is, but I will continue to 'flip da coin' for all years and pay particular attention to 1994 through 2002...gut instinct tells me there's something out there...
I forgot to add, shouldn't you change the thread title to Things that make you go "mmmmmmm!"? You know, kinda like Mmmmmm. Nutmeg!
