Theodosius I AE3. 379-395 AD. OBV: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right. REV: CONCOR-DIA AVGGG, Constantinopolis seated facing, looking half right, holding scepter, left hand on knee. Mintmark ANTB REF: Pending
I like it! I have a weakness for LRBs with a green patina. Here's my Theodosius. Theodosius I; AD 379-395 AE2; 22MM/4.1G, Czyicus Mint OBV: D N THEODISIVS P F AVG; Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REV: VIRTVS EXERSITI; Theodosius standing L foot on captive holding labarum and globe, SMK(Gamma) in exergue; (RIC 25b)
Better than normal Theodosius I Gil. Congrats. Also very nice Race. THEODOSIUS I AE3 OBVERSE: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: CONCOR-DIA AVGGG, Constantinopolis seated left, holding globe & sceptre, CONSB in ex. Struck at Constantinople 379-83 AD 2.5g, 18mm RIC 57d
Cool addition, mine: Theodosius I (379 - 395 A.D.) Bronze AE2 O: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Theodosius standing left, head right, standard in right, globe in left, ANTA in ex. Antioch 4.67g 20.6mm RIC IX 68b
Theodosius I AE2 with misspelled reverse legend GLORAI ROMANORVM from Alexandria with the military bust. These also come from his co-rulers at the time but this is the only one I have seen with the spelling error. It was published in the Numismatist magazine decades ago but I have lost the reference. This is another of those great rarities worth nothing because no one cares. I did not pay extra for the error which was listed by the seller and doubt the next owner will either. If anyone has magazines from the 80's? and happens to see it, I would love to have the reference.
Nice one, Gil. Here's my Theo I, similar to Doug's, but from Cyzicus and with the correct legend. THEODOSIUS I AE2 4.74g, 22mm Cyzicus mint, 383 - 388 AD RIC IX Cyzicus 23 O: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, draped & cuirassed bust right, shield in left hand, spear pointing forward in right hand. R: GLORIA RO-MANORVM, emperor standing facing in galley sailing left piloted by Victory, head right, right hand raised, T in left field; SMKgamma in ex.
Very pleasing coins, everyone. I have one similar to Bing's but from the Nicomedia mint. This coin is in average condition for the type, but the reverse struck up in an unusually strong way, so I considered it worth the ten bucks I paid for it...
wow, great coins, gang!! (yah, I'm totally jealous) Hmmm? ... sadly and amazingly, I don't seem to have a Theo-I or a Theo-II ... arrrggghh ... man, I need to buy more coins!! (sadly, my budget is kicking into high-gear on March-1st => she actually made me sign a form saying that I'd stick to my budget ... yup, she's boxed me into a corner) => luckily, I love her to death ... and hopefully, I'll find a way to budget and still have an awesome time collecting ancient coins ... Oh well, it's all good ... but the Theo's will probably have to wait a while (great coins, fellas)
Both Theodosius I and II are fairly cheap considering all those high dollar coins you purchase, Steve. lol Gotta start working on that grid man. I'm up to 92 right now.
You can pass me easily if you wanted to but I don't blame you wanting all those Greek coins, which is a type I've been staying away from for the moment.
The coins are starting to get expensive now that I'm getting close to 100. There are a few low grades that I can get for around $20. I'm starting to get up to the $50 coins.
=> yah, sadly I'm sure it gets nastier and nastier as you climb the Rarity-ladder (I suspect that it'll eventually be a bit like the "Law of diminishing returns" => eventually, the cost of the coin will not be worth the thrill of the hunt, my friend ... in other words, you most likely won't have the opportunity or the cash to complete your awesome journey, Froto) ... Daryl, I like you (and I'm going to continue to push you towards "our goal") We Rock!! (seriously ... 88 <=> 92 Roman Rulers ... we're amazing, my friend)
Well damn, I'm glad someone likes me. lol Gotta keep going my friend. Actually, I'll keep up the hunt for as long as I can. I managed to get some really good deals that I never expected to get. Like that Hannibalianus for $35 for example. My main goal is to get over 100 Roman Imperial rulers. There are so many other coins I want to collect outside of the Romans. I want to do some freelance purchasing later on. Whatever good deal pops up, I can get it.
Ahahaha => don't sweat it Gil-galad => Bing is merely jealous because I'm talking to another coin-boy!
