If you have a weak stomach, do yourself a favor and go read another thread. I was going through my stack of cull coins to help someone in another thread, when I came across this old friend: An 1851 large cent. This is not just any old large cent. This one has been tortured in a bad way. Please....avert your eyes..... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Huh. Wonder what happened to the obverse pic. It looked fine on the camera. Anyway, the color is exactly that as shown on the reverse. Not that the color matters with this beast. Enjoy your eye bleach.
btw, VG-8 details damaged net PO-1 sorry, it's the numismatist in me...I feel compelled to attempt to assign a Sheldon grade to every coin I come across.
I'm in agreement with Gopher. I've seen worse but kinda like it actually. Unusual to say the least. (Post mint damage by the way)
Gopher: I was going to give it VG-10 details myself. I don't give net grades, so I'd call it VG-10 details, tinsnipped. Don't get me wrong...I don't think it's unattractive. Just horribly, horribly scarred. Clembo: Are you insane man? This is totally a mint error!!! This coin was stamped on an 1820 Jabanese 5-kwyjibo planchet -- more commonly known as the "square boy." It is therefore priceless.
Oh yes...Canadian..large cent..someone actually thought someone would bid on this? Heres the eaby listing for it.. http://cgi.ebay.ca/1876-holed-canad...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item1e5a5c4cb4
I'd pay 99 cents for it. But not the $3 shipping It's a beautiful coin. Somebody just took out their aggression on it.
Horribly abused, but yet still some kind of weird attraction to it's qualities as quite the oddity. I like it despite its shearing, VG-10.
I have to think it was struck, not mutilated. There is just too much copper beyond the denticles unless it was trimmed down from an off center strike. If it was cut down, it was an excellent job.
This is my candidate. For me the worst must show the promise of something better which has become irretrievably damaged. http://cgi.ebay.com/Antique-1802-Draped-Bust-Large-One-Cent-Coin_W0QQitemZ160403956890QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2558d2249a I ask forgiveness if I'm nominating your coin.
That coin took a beating; either dug or environmental/acid damage of some kind! Yet, still identifiable, so someone will want it.
The reverse is easy enough to identify, but it's impossible to determine which of the three obverse pairings it is. Statistically, it is probably a S-236 since the S-234 and S-235 are scarce. I wonder what it's bullion value is?
