    You are absolutely right, it is an altered 1944-D.

    Either the guy needs a new camera, or it's a doubled die retrofitted 1944-D Lincoln cent. A true rarity in the series. I'll bid on the darn thing then!!!

    A perfect example, look at the spacing between the 9 and 1 (4). These are easily spotted. Great catch.

    This is the craziest attempt to deceive that I've ever seen on ebay. Destroy a 1944D with a blow torch; alter it to a 1914D, and try to sell it. Do you think that he thought that people wouldn't pay attention to the date because of the scorching? I know that I didn't pay attention to the date when I first looked at the coin because it was so ugly anyway.

    My first wife had a pair of 38Ds.

    And her's weren't altered.

    44D woulda been way too much...
