This has almost certainly been posted before, but a quick search did not bring it to the surface for me. So for those who don't know, many items from the Smithsonian collections are viewable online. There is actually a virtual walkthrough for the Natural History Museum in D.C. More important for CT, the American History Museum has a huge numismatic collection, some of which is cataloged and photographed online! They say:

"The Museum possesses one of the largest numismatic collections in the world. The collections include over 1 million objects, comprising coins, medals, decorations, and pieces of paper money. Among the many great rarities here are some of the world’s oldest coins, created 2,700 years ago. But the collection also includes the latest innovations in electronic monetary exchange, as well as beads, wampum, and other commodities once used as money. A special strength lies in artifacts that illustrate the development of money and medals in the United States. The American section includes many rare and significant coins, such as two of three known examples of the world's most valuable coin, the 1933 double eagle $20 gold piece."

You can see 2499 pages of 10 objects each at http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/subjects/coins-currency-and-medals
Want to see a $100,000 bill? First on the list!

I hope someone finds this "new information" or at least a reminder.

the latest innovations in electronic monetary exchange,

The Bitcoin exhibit is really eye catching. But you need special goggles as it is virtually invisible.

Nice that it is online, but holy hell - almost 2500 pages of 10 items each?! That is some poor design there, and it renders the collection almost unusable for practical purposes.
