Okay we have all seen the altered silver pennies out there, but is there any way to tell a altered coin from one that came from the mint without cladding?

I've seen quite a few and when heated they turn gold colored, but today I found one that didn't,it's a 1985-D lincoln memorial cent in fair condition and actually looks unaltered, but is there any way to tell?

Logically speaking, I think it's safe to assume that the penney (cent) is not silver but rather something that someone plated with silver.

    Hello playin4funami,

I think you are asking about how to test for a genuine unplated cent dated post 1982. Of course there are many fakes out there. I returned a raw one to a reputable seller one time. I have a few that are raw & a few that are certified in my collection. However, I don't consider myself an expert on the error type. You might get some good comments if you post your question in the error coin section.

I should add that I have seen genuine examples that are shiny and genuine examples that are dull. I've got a couple more that are partially plated.

Can you post a photo of yours?
