The silver eagle is getting kind of stale so what can the mint do to spice it up, should they change the reverse or just kill it off and replace it with something new?
The only reason they are minted to begin with is so the govt. can sell silver and gold bullion and make a profit from doing so. Could they change the design and still do that ? Of course, but it's a big outlay of money for one thing that in reality serves no useful purpose whatsoever. And for another they (the mint) cannot change the design unless Congress and the President both tell them to do so by creating a new law. Nor can they create something new without a new law.
Every time the do a new finish or a reverse proof or whatnot, people throw gobs of money at them. I think its silly to pay a premium for bullion, personally.... but that's not a popular opinion.
I think the ASE has sort of become an iconic design over the past three decades. Besides, have you taken a look at the cartoonish stuff the Mint has been putting out? Two thoughts: Leave it alone and be careful for what you wish for.
I regard those as coins for collectors. Why would a pure silver buyer and seller want to pay the premiums attached to them?
They change the Platinum Eagle ... though for several years there the images were quite stale (2004 - 2015) and are not on my list to buy IMHO. I have a bunch of ASE and, at first due to their Obverse being the same as the Walking Liberty half dollar, I liked them. Now I think it's kinda old. But hey, I love stacking them. Silver is much "bigger" per dollar/oz than gold or platinum.
Exactly. If someone is treating those are bullion they’re doing it wrong but I’d love to buy from them.
Perhaps you missed the fact he qualified his statement with... "I think its silly to pay a premium for bullion, personally.... but that's not a popular opinion."
It's not a matter of opinion whether or not those versions are bullion or not. They aren't made like bullion, they aren't marketed as bullion, and they aren't sold as bullion. Furthermore they're available to be purchased directly from the mint by collectors while bullion is not available for purchase by the public directly from the mint.
Funny thing... I wasn’t a big fan of the walking liberty halves. But somehow when the freshened the design up for the bullion coins I fell in love with it.... Not that it has anything really to do with the thread..... However I am rather of a mind that the mint went a little crazy after the success of the state quarters. Ever hoping to capitalize just a bit more numismatic interest. So much so, that I rather roll my eyes now at any mention of a new design. I would rather they spend a little consistency time. I’m worn out with changes from the mint right now. But that’s just me.
That's one big 'nasty' dude.........could it be? Back on track.......the design never gets 'old' with me. I'll love it (and collect it) till the day I die........
You don't need to explain the differences as I'm well aware. Had he stated in absolute terms that they are bullion I would agree, but he was careful to clarify the fact he was expressing a personal opinion and he's every right to do so.
If he stated in his opinion 2+2=5 would you be defending his opinion then as well or would you correct it? It’s the same situation here, this isn’t an area where opinions matter there’s just the facts that they aren’t bullion issues. None of them sell on the aftermarket as bullion either so there isn’t even that angle to argue.
Are you even capable of accepting or acknowledging the fact that others can feel differently than you without being wrong?
Haven't you noticed how opinions everywhere today are being belittled and/or silenced unless they happen to fit certain narratives? I don't know about you, but a world or even coin forum where everyone must think/feel/believe the same doesn't sound like a hell of a lot of fun to me. Perhaps I'm the odd man out here, but I appreciate those holding different views/opinions than my own, and simply because they're the ones that challenge me the most.
