http://www.collectors-society.com/news/viewarticle.asp?IDArticle=275 "NGC has examined many of these recently-released Mint Sets, and has made the determination to designate these coins as SMS, for Special Mint Set."
Perhaps they meant SATIN MINT SET? I really don't like the SMS designation as it is still a regular mint set with coins of a new finish! I would prefer they call them 2005 P&D satins! Any way you cut it we now have a new set of coins to collect!
Hey Terry...take a look at the link...they say its for Special Mint Set but I agree with you that it should be SATIN MINT SET-- I think that the run of "US Mint Sets" has ended....a mint set is supposed to have BU coin in them just like we use in change....these sets they are doing now are nothing but non circulating coins.... So a complete run of Mint Sets would go from 1947-2004....that would one nice set!!! Speedy
I remember back in 1965 when the mint announced they were no longer producing proof sets and the uproar that created. These satin finished or matte specimens will be transitory as are all things the mint does. The one thing you can count on is... don't count on anything the U.S. mint says or does.
Another money-making scheme from NGC. I can't wait to see how their TV marketing friends present this.
Like it or not the satin coins will probably be the lowest produced coins this year. As a matter of fact, I am banking on it! And, on top of that these are the first year satins. Could get interesting down the road, especially the nickels!
