Post coins from the reign of any tyrant you choose I'm showing 3 examples each of 2 different types of coin. I've developed a habit of collecting 3 of everything. It's okay if you don't have 3 coins from the reign of the same tyrant. One coin per tyrant is okay.
Any tyrant I choose? Well... Some people say Caesar was a bit of a tyrant. Brutus certainly thought so. Elagabalus certainly aquired some bad fame and notoriety too. And just about everyone in antiquity hated this guy...the Roman Senate in particular so much that they supported Gordian I and Gordian II against him, and when they died, turned to Balbinus and Pupienus and Gordian III for salvation from Maximinus' wrath.
Excellent presentation @Deacon Ray ! This guy was just plain bad... Agothokles took Syracuse by killing 10,000 people in the City... Here is his write-up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathocles_of_Syracuse What IS interesting, he was the first to take a War to Carthage's homeland, well before the Romans did... Sicilia, Syracuse Agathokles 317-289 BCE Hemilitron, AE 23mm, 9.8g, Obv: head of Kore-Persephone left, wreathed with grain (GREEK) SYRAKOSION (weak) Rev: bull butting left, dolphin left and above, dolphin left below, NI below lower dolphin (not visible) Ref: SNG ANS 561-571; Sear Greek Vol 1 1195
Tyrant, eh? Ummm, sweet ol' Uncle Caligula seemed like a bit of a bad cat ... => they even made a cool porno after him!!
Tyrants? We could be here all day . I think I'll just say that that's another excellent graphic, Deacon. The top left coin is a really super example!
O jezz, i thought i just made that word up, but i just found it in the Dictionary .com(0o0)..gregarious, inventor of terms that already are...
Thanks, zumbly! The Archelaus galley coin was a great find. I purchased it from a VCOINS dealer who is not known for Judaean coins.
How about Genghis Kahn, who swept through China, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, and was known for wholesale slaughter of the defeated.
