I was reading yesterday in Coin News about the errors found in presidential dollars. Apparently, there were a lot sold on ebay for ridiculous prices, before more came to light. It also transpires that a lot of these 'alleged' errors are nothing of the sort or are extremely common.

Just wondered, which ones of these are the best to get and is the above any good?

Just want the low-down on these american coins.

For starters they don't have a picture of the back of the coin. Wonder why that is?

IF I were to waste my money on these errors I would wait until more came out and the price went down. In the long run I think most of these will die a silent death.
Either the U.S. Mint is that inept or are purposely making mistakes on these coins to generate interest.

In addition sellers are picking them apart for such slight imperfections then list it as a "new error". This off center strike sounds so trivial that I wouldn't drop more than face value for it if shipping was free.

"The above coin was struck off center on the back side of the coin. As you look at the band on the outer edge of the coin, you can clearly see that band is very narrow along the top edge of the coin to the right of the torch, and it is much wider along the bottom edge of the coin."

Sorry but this description made me laugh but you have to know your Monty Python to understand it. Sounds like Ann Elks theory about the Brontosaurus!

In short, if you're going to buy U.S. coins buy something that is proven. Not a "maybe".

My bad the back of the coin is pictured.
Guess that shows what a huge impression it made on me!

that 'off center' is probably within tolerance .
    Minor error.
If they showed the other side it would probably be a mis-aligned die.

I never really understood the attraction of error coins that would drive the prices so high.

This coin is not an error and is within mint specifications. It only becomes an error when the design is impeded by the rim of the coin.

The mint purposely leaves a rim for just this situation. It's to allow for minor misalignments and yet have a full image of the design showing.

This is just like paper money. The border is there to allow for minor misalignments. You'll even notice that the back design on paper money is smaller than the front so it doesn't look misalgned even though it's almost never centered with respect to the front design.

O.K.! I posted some images in what it's worth of my George Washington Dollars with multiple markings. You'll get an idea of what people are finding on these coins. Please note I only have 6 coins, and that's all I've ever had. 3 out of the 6 have something to look at.
