Did I pay too much? Please look at the photos. I bought this on E-Bay in auction format. To me this is a Real Rainbow Morgan Dollar. In the GSA case there is no way to artificially tone it. The real thing. I paid something north of $500.00 for it. What do you folks think?
A nice piece indeed....somewhere in the MS63 area.....but that's a strong premium for the toning........
Technically a MS 63 piece....the first thing I have seen was the streak over the face..but NGC decided to give a bonus for the toning....that's ok.
As a bullion investor I will naturally lean towards 'yes' as premiums are my absolute enemy.. However, the collector side of me always bares an affinity towards toning. The value can be very subjective and this means you may very-well find someone who wants a natural tone piece in that year even more than you wanted it. The original packaging doesn't hurt either! This richness to the color on the date is outstanding IMHO. Great piece.
Not to be a party pooper, but I'm not a big fan of the toning on that coin. Much of the color looks to be terminal.
The toning is original. Otherwise, the Mint would have put it in one of the "Uncirculated" cases. I don't think the toning is all that great, and $500 is a bit much. Chris
Not the toning that draws a lot of interest , a little high premium for the piece but interesting higher grade coin. 64-65 grade for sure. Ron W.
I've seen ones with more extreme toning for cheaper than you paid... Yeah, I think you paid too much.
I would have to disagree with you, the noise and chatter on the face is quite distracting. I would think ms-63.
A toned Morgan is just a beautiful piece. A Carson City Morgan is even better. Very nice coin, great condition. Paying the price is the choice of one who wants something they desire.
If you are happy with it...then good for you! Redbook price x .85% is my go to "bid formula"...and '83CC's are fairly common. I have an NGC slabbed 65 that I paid 473.00 for.
One thing you can depend on here, as you probably know, is people telling you exactly what they think. Thick skin definitely required! That said, I like the coin, regardless of toning. Would I pay $500 for it? Nope. Then again, if you like it, that is all that matters.
