    Hello forum.

    I need your mass opinions.

The 4 piece 1995 gold eagle set goes for $2800+ alone on ebay.

Combined with the silver eagle, about $5000.

Illini420 brought a great point to my attention and that is if you buy the set, you're basically buying the Silver eagle for $2000 -whereas the 95-w silver eagle alone pf69 goes for no less than $2850 on ebay. Grey sheet has raw I believe at $2700.

    Pros and cons of this?

For me, pros would be, $500-700 savings.. and that's about it.

Cons-your not getting a certified silver eagle. it could be a 65 or a 69.
    damage, cleaning, scratches, who knows..

Now of course, the smart move would be to go to a show like Long beach and look for the set so you can see the goins in hand.

But I think Mr Illini is onto something big here and I really can't stop thinking about the idea either..

The more I think about this.. The more "Deal of a lifetime" screams at me. However, $5000 is a lot to risk on this idea.

If there's money to be made by breaking it out of the set, it's probably already been done. These coins are like 15 years old already. I thought you already purchased the certified PR-69? I'd like to have one but only one, I'll be patient and work on the rest of the set while I monitor the price on these. I'm thinking that prices my dip around Christmas time, 'cause folks will have to spend all their money on presents that aren't over 2K. I think lower priced coins will do very well. JMO

Frankly the five piece set was probably a good deal. After looking at the closed auctions for the past month it looks like even if it slabbed as a 65 you would still break even. If it slabbed any high you'd probably make a profit.

Well, to take your first comment to task "If there's money to be made by breaking it out of the set, it's probably already been done." it's being done still apparently. You could have been the high bidder of that last set for about 5k and had that silver eagle for about $1900-$2000.

Illini has brought a great point and I give him full credit for this idea.

I paid $2769 for my PF69 UCAM Silver Eagle NGC graded and I'm kinda hitting myself because of this idea.

However, I'm considering selling it to buy this set.. Who knows.

If that Eagle was a PR-65 would it have been worth it? And are the gold eagles in the set selling? I still won't pay 2K+ for a '95-W silver eagle, and I'm an avid collector of the proof ASE series....

Well, the point here(no offense) is not what you will pay for a silver eagle or not but I appreciate you mentioning that anyway.

2k for a 95-w silver eagle for people who have the $ or just love and have to have the coin is a great price... but the question i pose on this thread is, is it worth taking the risk given the pro's and con's?

If you like the looks of your PR-69, I'd keep it because the price wasn't too bad. I think that if you buy some lower priced coins that you can make a killing at Christmas time. 2K would blow my budget for my entire family! LOL

I'd say that some could afford it, but certainly not a majority of folks. I also wouldn't expect to get 70 on it...MAYBE a 69, but it's risky and that's a lot of money to folks where I live.

I know of a buy offer right now for proof gold eagles at $1665 per ounce. So you could flip the 4 gold coins for $3080 today w/o incurring selling expenses. Not too shabby.

Very little chance of any proof Eagle grading less than 68. A quick review of the population reports will confirm that. Anyways, if you think there's a problem with the Eagle that would cause it to grade less than 68, just return it or sell it raw for a quick profit of a few hundred.

The key to the deal is finding a nice looking 5-coin set in all of the original packaging for around $5000 or so... they are tough to find, but I think it's definitely possible.

If you plan to turn around and sell right away, then yeah it probably is worth the risk. But if you don't - then it is not. The reason it is not is because these things have been dropping rather qickly and I see no reason to think they will stop any time soon.

I don't follow these, so I don't know about the prices.

But PCGS publishes the "frequency distribution" of grades. The 95-W has a total of 1,913 Proofs total. Of those 1,251 graded PR69 (65%). Only one graded PR70. There were 30 PR65s.

It's easy to see why the raw price is close to the PR69 price... 65% of 'em came up 69.

Yes, there's no doubt it's best to examine it yourself. With this kind of money, no way I go sight unseen and hope for a 69. Almost as good to sell it raw.

Ok, well I'm probably going to sell my PF69 UCAM on ebay then so I can eventually get this set. I don't plan on selling it right away, however, I do like knowing that I bought the coin at a very good price(around 2k)

    Thanks guys!

Sorry guys but I have MAJOR buyer's remorse right now for buying this PF-69 after seeing I could have saved $700 by getting the set..

Darn you illini for being so smart!

Off to ebay this pf69 will go soon I suppose.

Not to make it worse or anything, but people have been doing that since the coins were issued. I did it myself in 1999.

Now, learn from this. There are often ways to save yourself money if you exercise a little patience, listen to people who have been there before you, and ask questions before you go acting on ideas of your own.

Well Dougy, with all due respect my man, I did this because I didn't have $5000 to fork over !! :)

So please, think before you make these comments because with all due respect, I thought about getting this set but money was the factor. I could afford a $2700 coin but not a $5000 set! heh. But see, the kicker for me is I didn't really analyze the savings until after I bought the PF69UCAM for $2769.

With all due respect BNB - then you still should have asked the qurestions and exercised some patience until you DID have the money.

So please, think before you make these comments ;)

When are you going to realize that I have never said one word to you unless it was to try and help you ?

Doug, I'm not trying to do tit for tat here..

Look, the biggest concern here was the big 5k.

I'm not either. But I am saying what I am saying to HELP YOU ! Even my last comment.

I am not now nor have I ever tried to criticize you. I do not criticize people. I say things to try and make them think. I point out what is obvious to me because I have been doing this for 50 years. I have made pretty much every mistake there is to make, probably some that you will never ever make. So when I tell somebody something it to help them avoid making the same mistakes I did.

Now if you don't want my help, then I will stop commenting on your threads and answering your questions. All you have to do is say so. If you want it, then have the courtesy to listen. You don't have to follow my advice, but you should at least listen and quit taking everything personally.
