The problem with scanners

This 1963 $5 USN is a definite XF. It has a significant center fold that was 'worked out' , but you'd never know it from the scan. I did not do any photoshopping or other corrective work. It is simply a JPG reduction of a 600dpi TIFF scan. Just putting it up as an example to show how scans can be misleading, even when there is no ill intentions.

Anybody else buy a note via a pix they thought was one thing that turned out differently once it was in hand?

BTW, I bought this on an impulse from a coin shop a long time ago before I had any idea how to grade notes. I paid CU money for it. I might finally make back what I paid for it. ;)

I need to take a digital pix of it. The center fold is VERY evident to the eye. I was just pointing out how scans can fool ya :(

yes they certainly are. I would prefer to take pics with my camera, as i have been told they come out more natural ... but i ... err... am not good lol at taking pictures of coins or currency :(

Looks like to me the reflection from the scanner's light was so intense it did wash out the fold you are mentioning. I have seen this several times and I use a black background on my scanner to absorb stray light...indeed it is hard to tell a notes condition via a scan that and photoshope can make a grandma note look new!

indeed they can! i have been using a black backer baord for the last few days to a week - scanned several notes that way. The notes come out looking more true in color to the original and imperfections do not get washed out 'so easily'.

makes it hard for an honest buyer to do business at times when it can be so easy to hide imprefections in a sale.

Thanks for the tip. I did some scanning today and posted 1 note with a low serial and they look more natural if you include some of the black background when doing the final scan. I know you should be able to crop out the black if needed, but I feel that will help with the bleedthru. Thanks again.....
