Inspired by one of my favourite threads "The British are coming...", I just thought about gathering some of the Portuguese empire coins. At the end of the day it was the oldest overseas empire on the planet starting from 1415 when it conquered Ceuta (nowadays Morocco) and went through until the end of 1999 when it finally left the administration of Macau (now a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China). Angola - 5 Centavos 1921 Cape Verde - 1 Escudo - 1949 India - 6 Reis - 1845 Mozambique - 1953 - 50 Centavos Sao Tome & Principe - 1929 - 10 Centavos
Ummm, I don't have any "coins", but I do have one pretty cool ol' bank-note, plus I married an extremely pretty Portuguese girl (does that get me into your club?)
Escudos Ouro - Gold escudos. I'm assuming that note was a gold certificate, and it looks like someone cashed it in on Sept 29, 1942. That would have been a sweet little pile of gold. Unless I'm completely wrong, of course - I don't know anything about those notes.
Nice. I love Portuguese coins, and I agree that their role in early exploration is sadly overlooked today. I read a book on their exploration and early colonies and one of the things that held them back was they actually ran out of manpower to crew their ships and administer their colonies. The country wasn't populous enough for its ambitions.
Well, Brazil shouldn't be out of it as it was part of the Portuguese Empire until 1822. Brazil - 1816R - 960 Reis
here's mine: I got this 1 for the "coins with stars' collection. the reverse is way out of focus sorry. the rest of these coins are also in my "coins with stars" collection: these coins are very common.
Portugal 1000 Reis 1898 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of India Silver, 37mm, 24.97gm The coin design features a square cross, known as the "Cross of Jerusalem". This cross was the emblem of the Portugese military religious order, the Knights of Christ, founded in 1317 by King Denis I of Portugal, who needed experienced soldiers. He simply changed their name of an older military order, the Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights Templar or Templars. The legend "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES" is "in this sign you will conquer", which was a slogan used by the Roman Emperor Constantine referring to a vision of the Christian Cross assisting his army in a battle in AD 312
I only have 1 Portuguese coin(minus current euro coins). A 1932 5 Escudos(800,000 mintage) that I paid $0.99 w/free shipping off the 'bay (Not my coin since I'm not home with my pictures available) I, like Steve, am also married to a beautiful Portuguese girl
Very nice coins, everyone. I recently ordered a pre-Euro set. I occasionally get a hankering for modern world coins, and these are quite appealing in my opinion...
oh I forgot I have a 20 escudos coin too. like John Anthony's coin 4th coin from the left. I counted the compass a star coin. lol
