I am in shock. Just a few minutes ago I gota phone call from my local Police department. In reguads to a coin i bought off of ebay. From a seller by the name "whole4sale". It turns out that coins i bought from him is a counterfit. I wsa told that i would be contacted at a later date. Thats pretty much all the police man said. Compleatly random phone call. Sounds to me like someone out there in counterfit land is going to or has been nailed. Anyone else ever have anything like this happen? Sorta freaked me out.
That is a bit weird. Did you get where the police officer was calling from or what his name and badge number are, etc.? What kind of coin was it?
Wow! That is scary. It has never happened to me. What coin is counterfit? Did you know it was before the phone call?
Are you sure the call was from the police? Did they ask you any questions about personal information? How did they connect your phone number to an EBay purchase?
I got all his info. the coins was a 1875 CC Trade Dollar. I acutally suspected it wasnt real but it has has NO trace of being counterfit, it weighs right, is the right size even has a little wear, theres not a a trace of anything wierd. The only reason i thought i was fake was the price i got it for. This is the best fake i have every seem in my life. Im glad i didnt send it to a TPG. Im betting I wouldnt have gotten it back. lol At lease now I still have it if they long arm of the law comes to get it from me. Speaking of TPG. I have some other trade dollars with chop marks. Do you think PCGS os ANACS wo slab them? More as a point of proof that they are authentic. I know they are. Also yes im sure it was the police. Becuase I was thought was wierd and called them back.
Roy is right. Collectors and Dealers have been hurt seriously in the past when "The Police or Robbers" show up. Please be careful. It sounds just TOO fishy. They also could be caseing the place to hit you while your away too... Take Care Ben
You know what. These are good valid concerns, thank you for writing that. the good thing is 90% of my collection sits in a bank the only stff i keep at home is pretty much junk.
You may want to call the police and tell them about the call. They should be able to verify the authenticity of the call from another law enforcement agency. I wouldn't let it go.
Please do some investigating on your own. Call the officer back. But, don't use the number he gave you. He certainly identified himself and the department he was calling from so call information or look up the number in the phone book and call him. I suspect this is a scam or at least someone trying to discredit the eBay seller. But, I could be wrong so that's why you need to investigate. This story has sent up too many red flags for me!
About a year ago I got a call from somebody telling me to call a sheriff about an auto accident at a telephone number, so I took it upon myself to dial the sheriff's office from the phone book and told them about the phone call, what it turned out to be was a scam, the call actually came from an inmate in jail in s. florida and the number that the caller gave me to call would've allowed them to make telephone call's and charge my phone bill, could've run into thousands of $$$$$$$$$
I looked p the local polices mbers and the one he gave me gos to the DT for fraud. I talked to the partner of the officer that called me, I left my name and nummber. As well asked if the ffice i would have talked to was intoday. He said yes but hes out right now. That was about a hour after they called me. SO i will wait for them to call me back. when he does, I will ask if its ok for me to call him right back at the nummber i found on line witch like i said is that same as the one he gave me. Jst so i can MAKE sure it is the poilice that called me about this matter. On the other hand of this, That seller Whole4sale, is a known fake coin seller. I looked him up online and his name comes up on more then one site for being a seller of counterfit/ fake coins. I anycase. Im not going to just sit here with out trying to make sure that the phone call i got was indeed from the police. Because even i dont have my coins here. I dont want to take the chance of some one wanting to brake nto my home,.not that i have anything wirth the effort. lol its just the fact. I again would like to say thank you to all you guys for replying to my post with your concerns. You guys are a great bunch.
Further advice I'd give is never EVER buy a US coin from China. There are no reprecussions for fraud. For that matter, I wouldn't buy anything on ebay from China. It's just too risky.
Counterfeiting old money that has been out of print for decades is still counterfeiting. I wonder why someone would bother to counterfeit old money rather than new money that you could just spend? Seems like the long way around in the counterfeiting business while leaving lots of finger prints along the way. That's what's so special about ebay. You never know who'll you'll meet. I just met a guy that sold me 2000-2006 proof roosies for my dime collection and he mistakenly sent me 2000-2006 proof pennies. You know what he did? He put the correct order in the mail and told me to keep the pennies. I tried to send them back but he wouldn't take them back. A real nice guy to say the least. These two examples are the extremes that can be experienced on ebay. One counterfeiter and one more than honest seller. I just wish ebay had some way of weeding out the former and keeping the latter. :goofer:  :hammer: :computer: :goof: :kewl: :vanish:
Nathan: For the record, it is not the policy of TPG's to not return fakes. They just won't salb them. Good luck, let us know what happens & if they were real cops.
