    Drusus Pecunia non olet

I am already a fan of German Meissen Porcelain Coins and Medals. I have to say that this one is, IMO, exceptional.

The medal is from Oberammergau, this is a German town located in Bavaria famous for preforming an elaborate production of the Passion Play every 10 years.

    Why you ask?

"The play was first performed in 1634 and is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague then sweeping the region they would perform a passion play every ten years. The play is now performed in years ending with a zero it involves over 2000 performers, all residents of the village."

This Porcelain medal was issued in honor of the Passion Play performed in 1930. By all account at this time it was a huge deal, people like Henry Ford came to see it, was so thrilled he gave the actor who played Christ a free car...Hitler came an saw the anniversary showing of 1934. He found Pilate to be the true hero of the story.

We went to Oberammergau in 1985 and even without the play going on it was incredibly impressive just seeing the props (cross, old building fronts, stone streets, paintings on the walls of buildings, etc...) which stay up year round and are hundreds of years old made ones skin tingle. It was simply beautiful.

    Take Care
