For those of you that don't get coin world. "The Chinese government has formally requested the United States restrict the importation of Chinese archaeological material including coins, citing the increase in the "pillage of archaeological sites and smuggling of cultural artifacts." Coin World January 24, 2005 Well that's all well and fine but lets also stop the sale of all the fake Chinese crap thats finding its way here also.
That is EXACTLY how the U.S. should respond!!! We will consider your request as soon as YOU stop all the counterfeiting of U.S. classical coins!
Having been put in the unemployment line, more than once because of Chinese imports, I've got one thing to say to China. (can't say it here, though)
That's exactly what I thought too! Maybe I should put my crown back on for a minute and make a royal proclamation? Or just call out the axe-man? Rachel
1) 1 billion people is too much for a gov't to control. Lots of stuff is hard to enforce, period. 2) The Chinese-made fakes are on the market because there is a market for them. Ebay is one of the main venues for the people to sell them directly. Blame ebay for allowing them (modern fakes), while not allowing legit fakes (contemporary counterfeits). The people who buy them are also to blame for bringing them into the market here.
If the US implimented such a ban it would probably also result in a ban on the importation of almost all coins from China. (Like the recent legislation banning importation of any coin that may have circulated in Iraq if it can't be documented that it was exported from Iraq before I believe it is 1990. (bad legislation since Iraq was a major crossroads. It essentially could ban most all European coins from before 1990 from being imported into the US.)) As far as the fakes from China, those are already illegal to import into this country and any ebayer who buys one from these china sellers and actually receives it could have it seized by customs and be charged with a crime. As usual we don't need new legislation, we need enforcement. But it is easier to pass new laws and point at them as having done something about a problem, than actually doing something about it.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm in full agreement with both Terry and pcrdnadave on this topic.
It would seem to me that if the U.S. agrees to this, then China would be banned from the eBay collector's market in order to comply. Therefore, the goal could be achieved without any stipulations. Just think how much easier it would be to just report any seller from China who selling any coins. There would be no red tape because the auctions could be pulled immediately due to non-compliance with international law.
I think you already know the answer to this. Clinton banned the import od handguns from China now the chinese wants the President to ban the import of their coins. A case of they can't control their losses. catman
My reply to us collectors is, buy the legit Chinese ancient coins, they are prolly genuine, and let them keep the fake trade dollars...
