i might liek the designs, but all themint is doing is taking a failed idea and creating an instace for hoarding. Everyone might want the new designs and will hoard them .. they will never circulate!

More coins for the Mint to sell to collectors for their "complete sets".

I would rather see our circulating coinage redesigned. 100 years of Lincoln is plenty. It's time for a change. How about returning Liberty to our coins? Dead Presidents just don't make attractive coins.

I like the idea but I dont like the choices they made to put on the dollar coins. There are seven events or highlights in history that are being commemorated. Thats alright but there should be individual Native Americans honored instead of selected events. I've included a site with more information on the subject.

Meet the needs of the nation? What nation are they talking about? Are they living in the same nation as we are? The only need here with the Prez and Native American dollars are the needs of the people that hoard them thinking that they'll be worth a bundle someday, we all know how all of that works out. These dollar coins will circulate just as much as they have been...very little. I imagine that a pretty good percentage of Prez and the upcoming Native American dollars fall into the hands of those hoarders, or do we call them uneducated speculators.

I thought they were going to do away with the inscriptions on the edge!! Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it now!! That is the only problem I have with it as long as there aren't any (or many) other special 'series' running at the same time.

2009 is going to be an exciting year.... lots of coin, too many maybe. I will try most likely but will probably end up buying a mint set.

No, as stated in the previously posted excerpt from the law, "In God We Trust" will be moving to the obverse of the Presidential Dollars, but the other edge legends are not mentioned in that law, so they'll stay where they are (or occasionally aren't).

Obviously you haven't paid any attention to the many, many postings about the fact that Congress (both houses) and the President collaborate on passing and signing new laws that specify exactly what the Mint must produce.

If you think too many items are being produced, complain to the four people whose office you voted on - your Congressional Representative, your two Senators, and your President.

(If you are an adult US citizen who didn't vote, quitcherbellyachin!)

It appears the Mint needs new ways to make money.

"The reverse design will change each year to celebrate an important contribution of Indian tribes or individual Native Americans and contain the inscriptions “$1” and “United States of America.” Like the Presidential $1 Coins, the Native American $1 Coins will maintain their distinctive edge, golden color and feature edge-lettering of the year, mint mark, “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust.”

E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust. Shall we insult the Native American community a little more? Government in action and pathetic as usual. Just plain pathetic!

This was the law as it was passed but the new bill will change this and "IN GOD WE TRUST" will remain on the Obv. of the 2009 Sackies just as it is now.

I agree. After Lincolns birthday redo the cent. Then move on to the dime, 60+ years of FDR, He must go as well, but for the coup de grace lets finish off Kennedy on the sacred half dollar of another dead President on the coin too long, JFK's 45 years of the same old design of another uncirculating coin is enough.

Does the 25 year rule apply at all anymore? If so when can we take the 'Icons' off the coinage and come up with something new or old like Liberty.

At least they tinkered with the Nickel and the Quarter, but they could both be put on the chopping block as well again, permanently.

Enough of any and all Indian coins as well, they are relics from late 19th century coinage that was "new" back in that day and we won't let go of those either.

If the Mint can only come up with honoring Samoa or the Mariannas Islands and whatnot than I agree lets put Lady Liberty back on our coinage.

Well, i'm sure that tribe leaders are consulted on the way their people are honored on our coinage. Actually the mint will probably make less money by needing a new reverse design each year. I like the idea, it makes each year a distinctive design(rather than only changing one date digit).

Is this for both proof & BU coins?

They will try just about anything to get people to use dollar coins. But unless/until they stop making $1 federal reserve notes and/or put a little silver back into the dollar, they won't circulate and collectors will be the only ones seeking them out.

I really dont think the Native American tribal leaders are consulted at all, especially in this case where most everything that is being commemorated on the Sac reverses, the government had something to do with or was part of a government program in some way, with the exception of Jim Thorpe. When did they start caring what the Native Americans had to say, they dont. Has the U.S. Mint or a member of congress ever consulted you about a design change? No? And they never will.
