Two days ago, I received a news release from NGC about special Denver ANA show labels for the new Enhanced Uncirculated Set coins, PURCHASED AT THE DENVER ANA SHOW ONLY (show receipt required - PCGS, THIS IS HOW YOU STOP "CARRY-INS"). Here's the weird part(s): 1) The release was dated 7/31/17. 2) It has disappeared and I can't find it anywhere today. 3) There were two separate aspects to the program - the ANA label, and the Denver Show Purchase text on the label. Either was available without the other, and each was a cost.
Maybe someone was preparing an email/press release for 7/31/17 and accidentally clicked post. After seeing their error, the post was removed.
So I've finished writing up my NGC form for this EU/SP set release: 10 modern @ $16 - $160 10 ANA label @ $ 5 - $ 50 10 "First Day-ANA" @ $10 - $100 Handling fee 1 @ $ 8 - $ 8 Shipping fee 1 @ $28 - $ 28 TOTAL $346 Worth it? Soon? Intermediate term? 50 years from now? (active coin collecting son)
Here's the thing - the form is filled out. It's in my binder for the Denver ANA show. If I care to, I can be the first guy with one to NGC (like the clad Kennedy set in 2014), or I can skip it and tear up the form. These are precisely the kind of moderns I have slabbed typically - those without a space in a Dansco. I did it for the EU/SP Sacs, the odd 2015 proof dimes from the March of, umm, Dimes set, and a few others. They did change a few minor details of the program since the "leaked out" release on Wednesday. Aaaannnd now the ANA knows it's coming, which they didn't five minutes ago. NGC and the Mint didn't share it with the ANA. Shades of 2014. Yummmmmy!
@V. Kurt Bellman good thing you all have time to prepare. This has the potential of being another Gold Kennedy, especially if the coins sell out on the US Mint website and the show is the only place left to buy the set.
How much of that was because it was new, and how much because it was gold? That's the question. Either way, I'm now on queue management duty for ANA on whatever line there is. The better analogy to me is the Kennedy clad hi-relief set done at the same time as the gold one. That has done better in the marketplace than the gold has. The gold was hugely overbought, as I knew it would be. A lot of people see that yellow metal and lose all ability to think.
After the 2014 Chicago gold Kennedy debacle, the ANA may end up objecting to this entire idea. They don't like these kinds of events. Jus' sayin'.
ANA would get to much push back if they started to publicly tell people what they can and cannot sell at the shows. Any objection would be symbolic. But can you also swing by the PCGS table during the show and pick up a copy of their magazine, I would love to hear what's in it. They just announced they are bringing that back which they hadn't done in like a decade and will be giving out free copies at their table during the show
Actually, because of the 2014 debacle, there's a clause in the contract that says they CAN restrict this kind of stuff. I told Rhonda I'm ready to help with queue management. In fact, my email said, and I quote, "Let's do this!!! I am STOKED!!!"
So, Kurt, does that mean you've pre-packed your nose plugs? After all that was the knock on the paid line sitters, that they were just a bunch of homeless people bussed in from downtown to buy the coin.
In my post I meant that this might be just as hectic as the Kennedy with people being bused in and paid to stand in line. I didn't ever think that the Gold Kennedy would be a secondary market winner. It was mainly the label game, including the "first coin sold" angle, that helped push sales for those coins. I also agree with you that this EU set is more like the Clad Kennedy. Depending on what price the US Mint goes with, it could either do very well (at $35 or less), remain available for a decent amount of time and only see gains for show slabbed examples and high grades (At $36-$49), or be a complete dud at above $50.
I think the premium (if any) will be gone by the time your coins are back from grading. You'll have to submit under show grading, which I'm guessing is the $60 per coin express tier to get the "First Fools™" to pony up for them. Now you're talking $78.60 per coin for grading. As I've said before, not the game I play, but thanks for supporting the unfestooned, normal services by paying the extra fees for this stuff.
