Hey everone, What do you think about this, this can only be seen on the face of the morgan. Looks like bubbles Siggi
I can think of two possibilities and without examining the coin in hand, I won't pin it it down to one or the other but...I lean toward some form of environmental damage that was subsequently cleaned, leaving a damaged and somewhat pitted surface on the obverse of the coin. Seeing some of what looks like corrosion around the rim of the reverse, I might suggest that this coin was ( I know this will sound far fetched but I've seen silver coins that are damaged in this way) under water for awhile and then cleaned. It may have been in something that shielded most of the reverse while the obverse was exposed. I am thinking of silver coins that I have seen that were salvaged after Katrina. The other possibility is that the coin was struck by a die that had some damage due to rust. I still lean toward a Katrina-like theory. Thanks, Bill
What puzzles me is that this is only on the head, I do not see anything like this on any other place of the coin. Here is s better picture of the spots You can see the spots are all over the place on the face. But then there is nothing else were around the face
