For those of you who have been following my threads over the past few months, this is the final thread in my re-grading challenge. Just a quick summary, but over the past 10 years, Ive been buying up Morgans both graded and raw to put in my Dansco Albums. Recently I decided that I was going to have them all regraded and decided to send them in to PCGS. Since the majority of them were previously graded by PCGS and other companies, I wanted to see how accurate these grading companies were. If you search out Part's I and II, you will see that they didn't do too bad getting the grades right. There were some upgrades and there were some down-grades and some even were body-bagged, but all in all, I was pleased with the results and in my opinion, PCGS did a great job reassigning the grades. In this last batch, I sent in some re-grades, some new coins that I bought and cracked out and the remaining Morgans in my book. Here are the results.

    ........................Original Grade...............New Grade...............................
    1883-O ............. NGC MS64................... MS65.....................................
    1890-CC............ Raw, Cleaned............... UNC Details/Cleaned..................
    1891-CC............ Raw, Cleaned............... UNC Details/Cleaned....................
    1892 ................ ANACS MS63................ MS63......................................
    1892-CC............ PCGS MS64.................. MS64.....................................
    1894................. NGC AU58.................... AU58.....................................
    1899-O............. NGC MS65.................... MS66.....................................
    1900.................RAW..............................MS63.....................................
    1900-O..............RAW..............................MS63......................................
    1900O/CC..........ANACS MS64..................MS63 (Disappointed - CAC for sure!)
    1900-S..............PCGS MS64....................UNC Dets/Alt Surfaces! UGH! Pissed!
    1901.................PCGS AU55.....................AU55.........................................
    1901-O.............NGC MS63......................MS64.........................................
    1901-S.............PCGS MS63.....................MS63........................................
    1902................RAW................................MS62.......................................
    1902-O.............RAW................................MS64......................................
    1902-S.............RAW................................MS61......................................
    1903................ANACS MS65....................UNC Det/Cleaned (really bummed)
    1903-O............PCGS MS63.......................MS63.....................................
    1904................RAW................................MS63........................................
    1904-O............PCGS MS64+....................MS65........................................
    1921................PCGS MS65......................MS65.......................................
    1921-D.............PCGS MS63.....................MS63.......................................
    1921-S.............NGC MS62.......................MS62.......................................

So there it is. I would not recommend going this route, but it was worth it in the end. Be on the lookout for some of these as they will be offered for sale as I begin to upgrade my collection. I am trying to put together a nice MS63-MS65 collection. The more expensive coins I will have to settle for AU grades. Thanks for looking.

They alway's want you to send a few more back in. Sorry for those details grades. I did find it interesting that out of the 5 previous NGC coins you had, 3 upgraded a full point. Now try to keep this on the down low, as those are the coins I seek out routinely. ;)

I am actually surprised at how consistent they were. Bummer about the details grades, though.

I would agree with you.. The consistency with the previous PCGS grades was commendable, with of course the one exception.

What holders were the ANACS coins in previously (white/blue/yellow)? I'm guessing (hoping) blue?

The 1900-S is, of course, the big shocker. Did you consider sending any of the coins in a PCGS holder back to PCGS still in the holder for re-grade, or where they all broken out?

I also noticed that the only upgrades were the three NGC's. Were those old NGC holders?

The 1900 O/CC was in a yellow holder ANACS but that wasn't as big a disappointment as the 1903 which was in a old small ANACS holder. After 80+ coins sent in, I only had 5 details coins.....3 raw (which I suspected) and these 2 previously slabbed. Just wondering what they saw?

Most were newer NGC holders. There were some older ones, but not these in this batch.

They were all cracked out and in my books. May resubmit these two coins and make sure that I include the labels. Don't know if that will help.

I was surprised too. If you go back to the previous submissions, PCGS were usually spot on with their grades. I think I had one or two that took a hit, but most were spot on. Even ANACS grades were spot on when regraded by PCGS. It appears that NGC is undergrading many of their coins. This is where I saw the most bumps.

It may help and I certainly don't see how it could hurt.

Politics. They thing they're better than ANACS. Consistently...

Grading wise it won't make a difference. Once the coin is out of the slab the labels mean nothing. It would help keeping the population report a little more accurate though.

The market does agree they're better, but he sent in raw coins so I guess they just masically knew those coins history so politics could come into play......

I don't understand how you can call this "politics" or make any kind of judgement with seeing the coins. Perhaps they are borderline market acceptable coins. Perhaps the first time through the graders thought they were OK and the next time through different graders thought otherwise. Perhaps they toned a bit in the slab and that made surfaces issues more obvious.
