So I have been waitining patiently for my 3 LP1 sets to come in. I ordered on the very 1st day and they were shipped the 1st week of May. Needless to say I have been very mad at the fact that it has taken nearly 3 months since I ordered to receive my sets. Finally i check my mailbox today and there are 2 slips in there. Both are from PBGS so i figured it is one of my other orders. I get to the car and open box #1 and it is the DC First Day Cover...cool no problems. I take box number 2 which is pretty heavy so I think it is my bags of Guam quarters. I open the box and look at 5 small boxes inside...wow cool my five LP2's came in. I check the side of the box and every single one of them has a date of 2/25 so by that time Im thinking geez these LP2's are kind of early boxes but.... The mint screwed up my order and instead of sending three LP1's that I had ordered they sent me five LP1's instead. Booooooyahhhhhh!!!! 5 for the price of 3
Hmmm...that is quite a dilemma. It would require for me to pay postage to send it back to them....does that answer your question? I couldnt believe it, I even checked the boxes several times to make sure I wasnt seeing things. Have I been getting lucky or what. Unbvelievable
Well, and I may get hammered for this, but if you were at the mint and saw 2 boxes unattended, would you steal them? If you would, then you have no dilemna. If you wouldn't, and someone made a mistake and sent you 2 extra boxes, isn't it stealing if you don't say something? And no, you don't have to pay postage back. You contact them, tell them what happened and ask them what THEY want to do about it (it is their mistake, not yours). Then, if the postage is too much for them to pay, they may tell you to keep them and your consience is free (this has happened to me before). If they want to pay for the postage back, then send them, they weren't yours in the first place. Sorry to go all ethical in a forum like this, but that is what I would do. Just my two cents here for you to take or leave...
Man . . . I'd sure be bummed if I was the guy who ordered 5 and only got 3! (if there is such a guy) So -- you have quite the karma, don't you? You fall into rolls of 2009 dimes, and now extra rolls of LP1's . . . '09 is a good year for you, eh?
yeah most definitely...'08??? Not so much. 20K lost in the stock market in 08 was not fun...Im glad I have a very understanding wife but I firmly believe that everything happens for a good reason even if it is to learn a hard lesson.
I would probably keep them. The mint made mistake and you got the benefit...I don't believe in this soapbox holier than though stuff that many on this forum do though. If I got 2 UHR Double Eagles for the price of 1 I'd contact them and send it back...but a couple extra rolls of cents, who cares. Enjoy your coins and figure it's interest for the 3 month wait. Now, let the flaming towards my apparent lack of morals begin!!!
Being honest is "holier than thou" ? Wow. In any event, I'm not worried about trying to be "holier than the next person", I just worry about trying to elevate my own self. (And I know I have lots of room for improvement in that area). But, back on topic: Reminds me of an old story told about George Bernard Shaw (if I remember right) -- it went something like this: he asked a woman at a dinner party if, hypothetically speaking, she would sleep with him for $100,000,000 -- she said yes. He asked her again, for real, if she would sleep with him for $20. She was very offended and replied "what do you think I am?". His answer: "We've already established what you are, we're just negotiating the price now." I presume readers will see the point. A suggestion: contact the mint and ask them to charge your CC an extra $8.95 x 2. Or, simply tell them: "I ordered 3 and got 5, I don't want to return the other two, what should I do?" They will probably be very happy not to deal with a return. You'll probably get charged $17 -- a small price to pay considering you can sell them for, what, $50-$70 each on ebay, and knowing that you were completely honest. (Oh, and I would make sure that you weren't already charged for 5 sets! If you have paid for 5 and got 5, I'd think you were totally in the clear)
So, CamaroDMD, what you are saying is that your honesty has a price. At $18, you'd take them, but at $1200, you would not. At what point does the scale tip toward doing the right thing? And, though I respect your opinion, I'm not being "holier than thou," I'm just speaking up for what I believe is the right thing to do.
let the mint find it and you return it. that's it. afterall most of the mint products were overpriced.
Overpriced? Not in this instance! (Otherwise, he'd really want to return them, right?) They sold 'em for $8.95, and the market value is, what $50 to $70 on ebay?
no one is forcing anyone to buy from them(the mint). so i guess if you found a wallet you would keep it until someone asked you for it back?
Elaine: So we are all free to keep things that aren't ours if it is our own opinion that it was overpriced? Huh? I'll go back to this: What is the right thing to do?
Im just going to contact the mint and see what they want me to do. Im going to tell them that I really dont want to ship them back ut that I would gladly have them charge me for the extra two. They may just say keep them but at least I tried. Im gonna do what I think is right
Well guys I just got done with talking to a lady at the mint and she said to return them but after I explained to her that I am in Germany and that it is kind of an inconvenience for me to wait for them to refund shipping (since I would have to pay for it) the lady then forwarded my call to DC Headquarters to see if they could charge it instead and they decided that I could pay for them (which was what I offered to do). I got charged for an extra 2 sets and was told "Thank you for your honesty...." All is well and I get to keep 2 sets at the original price
This whole forum has a holier than thou attitude about things like this. It's really easy to stand up there and look down one's nose at another. I don't think this is that big of a deal. The OP got a few more cents that he should have. It was a mistake. It's not a big deal so let it go. That's my view, I've said what I think now I'm going to leave it at that. If you think I'm immoral or unethical for this then that's fine. You can return them if they come to you and I will keep them if they come to me. Now, flame on...I have said what I think and now am done with this topic.
