Wouldn't mind having a few of these in those holes, LOL. Link-a-dink-a-doo That beard detail is amzing IMHO. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Phoenix
His entire collection will be on display in Baltimore, a show I plan on attending. The Stewart Blay collection of finest known coppers, Lincolns included. To me, this is like a kid knowing he is going to Disneyland.
Here's the coin along with the reverse I think: http://www.coingallery.org/BlayLincolns1919one.html Also, don't forget to click on the next button in the upper right hand corner for more of this guy's collection!
First off, so far as I am concerned, if it is the finest Lincoln wheat, it is the finest Lincoln. I know I am in the minority, but I still like the 1917- better. Just for arguments sake, why am I able to see a nick on Lincoln's collar on that coin, but not on the MS68"s?
Don't proofs, a good number of which are almost certainly finer, count as Lincoln Cents? And, while the coin in question might be fully deserving of the assigned grade, not even close to all certified coins are. Accordingly, highest graded doesn't necessarily equate with "finest known".
Hey, Jack, are you realy going? I may be able to attend -- probably from Friday thru Saturday & then home again.
I personally have never seen detail like that in the beard on a Lincoln. That's just great! ... Gives me a new appreciation for them.
AHHH! So that is where my coin went. I think that's the one I put in a gum ball machine. I kept the really nice one.:goof: Should coins really be made to have all that detail? When you consider what people do to most coins I've always thought they should make most coins with just a number on them. Nice coin though.
Makes you wonder how many are out there? Who took the time to learn about coin collecting way back then? Where & how was it kept all these years, since they didn't slab coins back then? They might not even have known about coin corrosion and decay back then either. I also wonder what other Gems are in somebody's attick or locked away safe for some future day?
that's what people say about ship wrecks. Sometimes 20 examples are known to exist, but then a ship discovery can double or even triple it.
I am bumming hard. I just went to book airfare, rental car and a hotel, should not have waited so long I guess. It will cost me an AU-1909 SVDB. I'm going to dbl think this trip. I could stay home, spend the same cash and have a new SVDB. OR, I could spend the cash and see the collection.
If I had seen that coin on E-BAY I'd say it was probably a fake , that the beard looked funny , goes to show how little I really know . rzage
Wow that is beautiful. I'm not a huge fan of Lincolns but that coin gives me a new appreciation for them.
