Obviously, I like CoinTalk, but every week on Sunday night, I get the E-Sylum mail list from the Numismatic Bibliomania Society. The NBS is the collector society for literature, from books to auction catalogs, ephemera, and more. The formal journal for the Bibliomaniacs is called the Asylum. It comes out four times a year. Membership in the NBS is $40 per year ($25 for digital only; $10 for YNs). The E-Sylum is free, less formal, more wide-ranging, and interactive. You have to register to receive it. Over 3400 other people do.

The editor of The E-Sylum is Wayne Homren. He does a great job getting this out every week. I try to submit early in the week, of course, but I have been able to squeak in by Saturday afternoon and been accommodated.

Recently, here in CoinTalk, I cited a discussion that was going on in E-Sylum about the CONTINENTAL CURENCY "dollars." We have long accepted them as part of the narrative of the early Republic, patterns proposed but not adopted by Congress. But it seems that may be myth, not fact.

Most of what appears in The E-Sylum is less upsetting but nonetheless interesting. Not everything is compelling. I scan the headlines and read what catches my eye. But the entire run going back to 1998 is easily available and searchable online. At the upcoming ANA convention in Irving, Texas, I will be delivering a Money Talks presentation on John Leonard Riddell. I learned about him from reading the E-Sylum. Typical of the discussions, not much was known, and someone asked for more information and someone else posted some new facts and it went from there.

My recommendation to find out if this is for you is to goto the CoinBooks.org website, click on the E-Sylum archives and search for the topics that interest you.
