The Dollar Coin That Should Have Been

All this discussion about putting political corpses on coins, and nothing about the ideals of Miss Liberty.

Here is the design that should have been, this is from a 1969 ANA medal and is very similar to the design Frank Gasparro executed in 1977 for the Dollar coin before it was feminazied into one of the ugliest coins ever created by the US Mint, the SBA.

The intriquing aspects of this design, it heralds to the Liberty Cap designs of the USA Large Cents of the 1790's whilst having a modern treatment of the hair style. It is also emblematic of the Phrygian Cap from the Roman era.

That is a real nice coin/medal design. I would much rather have seen that than the SBA. Personally, I think we should go back to graceful portraits of Liberty and the like on our coins instead of putting the presidents and others on them. I would think that most people would agree with that. Most people don't know anything about the presidents that are on our coinage anyway. Of course, if we put portraits of Liberty, they'd probably say, "Who is that, Julia Roberts?" :rolling:

Not the 1794's, but the 1792 and some of the 1793's.

Kind of reminds me of Eunice Shriver! Not! The way things currently look this and many more worthy designs will ever be! Design concept tokens. Pity.

A modern treatment of the hair? It's basicly the same hairdo as that used on the chain cent of 1793.

What makes you think shes not black? She actually has copper colored skin.

Well, she should be obviously Black then, a freed slave walking into freedom with beauty and grace...

Sorry...I like this obverse (hair) better and the larger eagle reverse. Your coin and my favorite are sure better than what we have now so I guess it is good to still dream.

Everyone I met and talked to at shows really liked this design. Collectors liked it so what did we get instead? SAC and her kid!! A great reverse, an ugly obverse...but nicer than SBA's mug.

i designed and carved this design of sabina , the daughter of kish_kash of the cayuse tribe on the obverse a 1930 nickel, but it would work on a dollar...i think the native american indians have been abused above all people in the u.s.a. and need to be on more coins...

Well they've already been on quite a few... though the Sacagawea dollar was the first one to represent a specific individual.

I like the design Midas posted... though yours is a pretty good one too.

I guess it is safe to say that a depiction of Liberty is well received and would be collected by old and new numismatics alike.

Now...we have to figure out how to get her "elected" so she can grace our circulated coins again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this is one UGLY coin!

The design elements are all askew. There's too much blank space on the obverse (especially compared to the reverse). The portrait's eyes are "bug-eyed" and it's nose is too long compared to the thin, delicate lips. The hair is reminiscent of a wild, "Bride of Frankenstein" look (maybe her hair dryer is set on MAX setting). And what is with the giant "G" in GOD compared to the other lettering? And what is with that wacky "R" in TRUST?

The reverse is as nearly bad an abomination. The eagle looks like he's lifting his wing to avoid being burned by the sun (or maybe he's passing gas, who knows?). The word PEACE is incuse whereas the other lettering is not, all the lettering seems crammed onto the coin and the denomination is stuck in the middle because there's nowhere else to put it.

And no one, but no one, uses dentils on coins anymore. It think this fad went out in the 19th century.

Overall, this coin looks like a reject from the Gobrecht era.
