Here is one you don't see everyday Look closely. Do you see it? Do you see the 3D image of Jefferson wearing a mask? Truly a bizarre coin given the times. Anyway Covid or no Covid its still a nice coin.
Looks like a waffle-canceled coin, which I wouldn't really call an error, per se. Since the Mint did the cancellation deliberately, I wouldn't semantically call it an "error". But I guess these things get lumped in with error coins anyway. They're neat.
I've seen a number of coins with engraved masks, including several UK pennies with the Queen wearing a mask. Don't like people trying to profit over Covid but it was bound to happen. Bruce
Thanks Bruce. I agree whole heartedly about any low lifes exploiting the Covid epidemic. Rest assured this waffle coin has been in my possession well before Covid and is not altered it any way. Thanks for posting.
Typical of things made for the Government - shrinkage (parts from setup) and errors are required to be mutilated. Most of the time, another press is setup with tooling that does this: cross stamp, sheer, punch out a hole, flatten. Shrinkage and errors that are scrapped are reconciled.
You bet, Eric! Happy to oblige! That would be a snippet of information that I might not ever relate in the forum without something to elicit it like your coin.
I am a novice collector and today marks my 1 week anniversary on CT I have learned so much in this brief amount of time thanks to members and post like yours Thank you.
Point of fact, Federal law and contracts prohibit canceled/mutilated items going into the public domain. But I suspect that the statement is true enough: not much to restrict access to things like this. At a client of mine, the government inspectors will verify that scrap barrels are under lock-and-key and that scrap/shrinkage...although already mutilated...are sold to specific recyclers. Custody is much better of course, but can be breached at many points along the way to the smelter. I suspect that at the mint, this piece is not getting out with a mint worker. But where securities are thinner, access improves to the delight of error/variety/novelty collectors.
Happy one week anniversary. Collect what you like, after all it's your collection. Stick around, put up with our humor and a few insults and you'll learn a lot more and have fun doing it.
Thank you. I am enjoying my time here already. I am also quite impressed with the knowledgeable members I have encountered here. Thank you all for your help and especially your patience with new collectors such as myself.
