I can't guarantee that this is the oldest, but it is close and the one I remember the best. I will put it this way, I have had it over 1/2 of its life. When I pulled it out of circulation, there was a hint of red around the rims.

1841 Large Cent. Picked it up from a dealer in 1967. My collection was stolen in 1969/70 and they missed this one and only coin. I started again.

In 1943 my Dad gave me one of those brand new, shiny, Silvery colored pennies and that started everything.
And yes it's you Stainless. Nothing wrong with taking to long with refresh or start up. Nothing except this scrolling stuff I must go through.

Not sure which I got first, but I still have some wheats and buffs that I have had for thirty years.

I do remember when my Grandpa bought me a 1943 wheat cent at a coin show when I was 11 or 12. I still have that coin too.

4 culled out large cents and an old roman copper. They were first coins in my collection sometime in the summer of 86 or 87.

The coin I have had the longest is a 1914-D Lincoln that I bought in 1997 for $125. I sent it in to have it slabbed by NGC and it came back as F-15.

Oddly, it doesn't fit with most of my collection, but the romanticism of how long I have had it, and the fact that it was the first coin of any value that I bought when I started collecting again makes it a permanent keeper in my eyes.

The first coins in my collection were wheat cents taken right out of circulation.
    Started in 1955.
Nope, no DDO out of circulation, but did find two 1909 and two 1909 VDB.
But they have long ago been sold or given away.

There may be a Merc or WLH kicking around from that time, but no way for me to remember (Hey, that was over 50 years ago.)
The coin that I know has been in my collection the longest is a Brown Box 1971-S Ike.

Mine is actually a huge batch of coins which I found my parents' coin stash from their overseas trip. Quite interesting bunch and I still haven't managed to photograph all of them.

A bunch of circulated-to-near-total-flatness nickels from 1900 - 1930s. And they are FLAT, I tell you. Smooth as glass. Sheen as marble. Circulated beyond recognition.
