Hey Ian - you should remember this one Three times I have bid on this exact coin in separate auctions. The first two times I was outbid at the last second. The third time I was successful. And, as it turns out, I am quite glad I was previously outbid You see - in the previous two auctions I had bid more than double what I did in the 3rd auction. Of course, I was prepared to bid much higher in the 3rd auction as well. In fact I did. But my max bid was not even approached this time which a very pleasant surprise to say the least I don't usually collect copper coinage, but this is in my opinion the most beautiful design I have ever seen on a copper coin. It is a 1848 10 centime essai. What appear to be scratches are on the holder - not the coin.
Um, I don't how to tell you this. But I think I see an adam's apple on your coin. Only kidding GD. She sure is shinny and I guess that coin proves "all that glitters isn't gold"
Nice French trial coin. Boy,GDJMSP,that is a very nice French trial coin.I recently picked up a 1966 New Hebrides 100 Francs trial coin with 'ESSAI' added by the head. It is catalogued at US$45 in Krause.New Hebrides coins are of interest to me,as it was an Anglo-French Condominium,& it is now the British Commonwealth republic of Vanuatu.
Third time was indeed lucky for you. You don't come across many of them in your loose change now do you ? ;-) Nice catch. Ian
