The bank is playing hard to get. I dont know if you live in a big town or not but out here there are atleast 9-10 banks out here alone that I can think of and the population is around 80,000. If there are several I recommend ditching this one that is being a jerk to you.

Wow...every bank I have ever gone to out here has gotten me the rolls of pennies when I asked and every bank I have gone to to bring them back has accepted them though sometimes they ask if I am member. I guess it depends on the region where you live.

Pay the bank for your account in .01 cent - .05 cents hehehe..... of course that's what I'd do, not entirely something ya should do if you care about what they say behind your back lol

Hehe go for it then! Imagine the look on their face if you opened it with like 25 cents and never deposited another cent.

Good luck with the .25 account, just be prepared for some evil stares from the people behind the desk!

I'd try the same thing if they all denied me rolls of coins. I think though that a year ago I went to a bank and asked for 10 rolls of pennies the lady had to go to the vault and asked if I was a member and I said no but she went back and got them anyways. I then asked when she returned the minimum of having an account and I think she said $25...

If you want the tellers to get rolls for you your best bet is to be nice to them. If you go in and open the account with a very small amount and continue to make small deposits they will just think of you as a nuisance.

Try to find a teller who seems receptive and be friendly. Tell her you are a collector and you like to search rolls. If you make her like you and remember you she will go out of her way to find good stuff for you whenever you come back.

If you irritate her she won't do a thing for you and neither will anyone else at the bank.

Yes those are some good points. If they wont do anything when all it would take is 30 seconds of their time and you are nice with them then I would tell them "Your bank is going on my black list and as long as I live I will never have an account with you and I'll see to it no one in my family ever does either."

If you go in with a positive attitude and be nice you shouldn't have a problem. The tellers really don't care if you have $100 or $100,000 in your account, they just want their drawers to balance at the end of the day and not have to deal with jerks.

Yes balancing is key. I once read that an average bank teller gives away $300 per year on accident but I dunno if that is an exageration.

About 15 years ago I dated a girl who was a teller at a bank. Unfortunatey at the time I was 18 and was more interested in cars and girls than coins so I did not care to take advantage of the situation "coinwise". Not that I regret it, those were fun times. A good teller has their drawer balanced every day. Some days they will be in the black some days in the red, it pretty much balances out. Find a cute teller and be nice to her you might get a date along with some wheaties, bullalos and silver.

I'm straying off the topic a little, but at one time I had 40 savings accounts with various banks, and a passbook for each. Many of the passbooks had pictures of coins on the cover, and they (the passbooks) were one of my collections.

Little by little the banks upped the required minimum balance and pretty soon I was paying $2 to $5 a month for the privilege of having an account with them.

I closed out 39 of the 40, keeping only the one my grandfather opened for me, for $1, in the mid-1950's. I have to keep the balance above $300 or the bank will sock me $3 a month.

    It's all quite irritating.

Such a requirement is utterly rediculous. If I were you I would fire that bank and close out your account as a matter of principle. I've never heard of such an outrageous requirement.

Banks make their profit on interest charged to mortgages, car loans, business loans, their credit cards, and the like. Small savings and checking accounts like you and I have actually cost them money because all the bank does is provide us a service by storing our money, paying us interest and processing our checks (or cheques, if you prefer), with nothing in return from us. The banks even have to hire bean-counters to maintain our accounts, with all the attendant costs of hiring an employee. And our small accounts don't add much to the available capital a bank has to loan. They have to set a bottom line somewhere, and most banks do. Some may be nice and require that minimum only of new accounts, but they don't have to, and there is nothing immoral about setting the minimum. I will concede it's annoying, but it's the price of doing banking in a connected world.
