I have read alot from people on here about roll searching. I am curious as to the best method for this. How many rolls come in a "box" from the bank? Do they charge over face value for this? I have gone to the bank and done a few rolls before but nothing on a large scale. Any suggestions?
50 rolls in a box of Halves, 100 rolls in a box of Quarters, 50 rolls in a box of Dimes, I'm not sure about Nickels, and 50 in a box of Cents. Look in the teller's tray before purchasing the box. There likely more silver there than in the box. Most silver is from customers bringing coins in which have been stored a long time. Boxes are from the Fed. In most places, halves have been searched, so I'd go with a dime box, then quarters, then search for wheaties or IHCs. Half of a nickel box is usually current-year dated.
50 rolls each/ 25.00 cents, 100.00 nickels, 250.00 dimes, 500.00 quarters, 500.00 halves..... cents are 50/roll (.50), nickels are 40/roll (2.00), dimes are 50/roll (5.00), quarters are 40/roll (10.00), halves are 20/roll. (10.00) sometimes you can get half boxes of quarters and nickels. I don't know about cents, dimes, or halves. small dollars (sacs, presidentials, sba's) usually come in rolls of 25 (25.00) Occasionally you can get rolls of 40 halves (a double roll = 20.00)
The previous two posters gave great brief breakdowns of the denominations. But really, there's not much of an art to roll searching. If you know what you're looking for, it could become a really nice side hobby. And it doesn't hurt to narrow your search down to certain denominations. I generally do cents and halves if they're available. Quarters are tough to find any sort of silver, which by the way is what most searchers try to look for. But with the watered down content from the state quarter program, it's tough! A little word of advice, pick designated "pick up banks" spots and designate "dump banks". Like it's name implies, you want make sure you don't dump your searched stuff where you pick up new boxes. A lot of newbies make this mistake. And mark your rolls with a dot or other trademark, just in case you get some of your old rolls you will know to pass them by.
Banks generally have extra boxes of pennies, nickels, and dimes on hand. You should be able to go in and just ask to buy a box. I've never asked to buy a box of quarters, so I'm not sure if they would have an extra box on hand, but my guess would that they would have one because of how commonly quarters are used. As for half dollars, you'll have to ask your bank and see if they can order them for you. Some will, and some won't. After you order them it usually takes up to a week for the bank to get them for you.
