So as I begin to make plans for my new venture in to coin collecting, I remembered that I actually did have a coin, or perhaps better termed a quasi-coin, lurking somewhere in the closet. I managed to find it last night.

Turns out, it's a 1994 Alaska Goldpanner Medallion made of pure silver "The Alaska Mint"...don't really think it qualifies as a coin since it isn't currency. Seems like they go for about $30-$50 in the online vendors I found. Kind of a neat find to start off the process.

Has anyone heard of these? Is it a common thing for folks to collect or is this some oddball item without much popularity?

Alaska Mint products are pretty well known. A bit expensive, but the quality is nice. I usually stop in their store at their mint when I'm in Anchorage, but I normally stick to buying their jewelry for family members.
