We have discussed this coin and the blemishes before, but after receiving mine it appeared blemish free and then I just went back today and looked at it again and the blemishes are now showing up. Two on the obverse and one on the reverse. It is still in the Mint packaging. Anyone else have this experience? Photo on 4-5-19 at 1.35 PM.jpg

I haven't opened my Mint box so I don't know if I have a good one, one with a blemish or a magical one like you have.

So you received it in good order and the blemishes came on after your initial inspection?

So ... the mint has a surface that starts blemishing once you start staring at it ?

I can believe that especially with these ...

Yes. I examined it very thoroughly upon receiving it and it was free of the blemishes. Now they are showing up.

I wish I'd taken photos of it when I received it, but alas I did not. Because of the publicity it got about the quality of the W cent, meaning the blemishing, I examined mine carefully and it was clear until now.

Going to have to check mine tonight or tomorrow. The two I got were blemish free and now curious what I find. Wonder if there's a weird chemical on the packaging itself.

According to the Mint, the plastic was supposed to be coin safe, but I'm inclined to believe it is not.

Those blemishes are right where they are on every other coin I've seen too.

My 5 haven't changed since I got them (3 w/ blemish and 2 w/o). But, some of what looks like blemish on the coin changes if you look at several different angles. The plastic distorts the appearance some and the blemish actually disappears. So, I think there are blemishes on the surface of the coins and a distortion looking through the film. Has anyone else seen this effect?

My, my, I beginning to wonder if anyone is going to get a decent coin. The plastic, something in the process before it's sealed? And if they turn after the fact what will happen when someone buys these in slabs and they turn later? I have not heard anything really good yet.

I am anxious to hear how yours fared. Based on what @furryfrog02 said, I believe there must be a piece of handling equipment that was unknowingly contaminated somehow.

I have 2 that appear to be blemish free. Do I dare remove them and put them in a 2x2 or some other holder? Any thoughts?

Maybe, possibly heat damage from the sealing machine? Those spots I see look like heat damage. But of course I could be completely wrong.

I honestly don't know at this point. If it is compromised in the package possibly remove it. But until we hear something definitive about what's causing this, it's really hard to say. It would be a good question to post to Numismatic News to see if they can get a reply from the Mint.

I have my sets but I may have to order a few again later this year to see if they are better than the first orders.

The Mint must be getting tired of complaints about the quality of this free Cent by now.

I think the mint should have used the same packaging they used for the 1996 w dime.

It is difficult to think that it is caused by the mint container since most of the blemishes are in the same location. For now I will leave them in the mint wrapper. Thanks for the feedback.

I couldn't agree more. I think there is something on the surface of the coins causing this. I haven't looked at mine but every one I have seen has those blemishes in the same area.

They both still look good. No blemishes. Packaging makes it a nightmare to photograph, but I did find something pretty cool I missed before. Looks like a die crack on one of them between R and I in America.

EDIT: I also started this thread as to not potentially derail this thread.
