Entry must be received by Midnight Sunday 1/2/2011. Contest ends with last CDN newsletter 0f 2011. 1st Prize One Silver proof set your choice of 1961, 1962, 1963 or 1964. (1st place goes to the portfolio with highest value. The ending value must be over $5,000. Odd chance a tie the first entry is the winner ) 2nd Place gets nothing, but bragging rights. Hopefully have more then two entries. To determine the purchase and selling price the last issue of the Weekly Coin Dealer Newsletter (CDN) gray sheet for 2010 and 2011 will be used or prior issue for page 3A or 3B. The Purchase price will be the ASK price of the CDN and Sell price will be the BID price of the last Weekly price for yearend 2011. Up to Four different coins can be chosen for the portfolio. The coins chosen must be in the Weekly CDN at the start and conclusion of the Contest. If the coin is removed from the weekly CDN sheet the value is Zero you lose your investment. Must be a current CT member and not banned/removed from the CT forum. A brief description of why you made your choice/choices would be cool. I'll be going all in with the 2009 Unc Mint set. If Ask is still $31 next issue I'll get 161 sets. I picked these for the 8 bronze lincoln cents Mintage lt 750,000 6-13 lowest mintage cents 1st 1909svdb 2nd&3rd 2010 sms 4&5th 2008. Hmm... I don't subscribe to the Coin Dealer's Newsletter... would you recommend I just make my picks regardless of their current Grey Sheet price? I have no way of accessing a Grey Sheet I think.
I'm being depressingly simple and plain... Give me $5000 of junk silver. (Since this is numerous common coins, I propose simply purchasing at NY Spot price close on the date of the final 2010 CDN greysheet, and calculating final price the same manner.) My reasoning is probably fairly obvious.
sounds like fun, but i have no access to cdn, so i don't know what is and is not listed in it. seems fuitless to pick a coin that isn't listed.
I had to choose a method to price coins and limit the selections. I don't have an annual subscription to CDN and will purchase the last 2 issues next week to keep track of the contest. Yeah, this would work better if you went by NGC/PCGS online price guides or something. I've got a CDN in my hand from last year and all that is covered in depth are commemoratives, morgans, peace, Mercury dimes, WLH's, BU modern dollars, proof sets and modern American Eagles. The rest are all generic prices based on type or motto/no motto with one row of graded pricing given for an entire series. I'll never understand how that's supposed to be useful.
Oh. I just read this post. If you wanted to just go by what is listed specifically in the CDN, that would work. Unfortunately, I don't have a recent one! I'll probably get a new one in January.
I also don't have a CDN (or a clue for that matter based on last year), so give me 3.5 oz of generic gold coins (saints, eagles, it doesn't matter). I will bet my entire $5k on the price of gold over the next year.

I'll go with $5000 worth of 2010 Silver Proof Sets. This is the first year of the ATB Quarters; 1999 was the first year of the State Quarters, and look at the huge price rise since its release.
ok, I'll go with 7 generic Ten Dollar Gold Indians. Pick a year. Lowest priced most generic one. I would tell you which but I have no Greysheet with which to make my choice
I have never seen this Canadian Coin journal. Interesting contest for those that follow that particular publication. Interesting contest. Does magazine cover MPC's?
